Hallo,

I've seen a number of people on eBay selling these but I was wondering if anyone can recommend someone they have received batteries from and tried?

Cheers,
kully

Try your local Leica dealer.

Don't waste your time and money on generic batteries for your M8. They do not hold a charge and could void your M8 warranty if something goes wrong.

They work, but they are a waste of money. They have to be completely drained each time to keep them calibrated. I have a few for dire emergency use.

They in a word - suck. I have had two completely die and would not recharge. Pulled the camera out and it was hot to the touch, the battery completely dead. This happened twice.

There's some negative and positive views on 3rd party batteries. Run a search to get a wider range of comments.

For myself, I've got 2 Leica "branded" batteries and 2 no-name batteries.
As I drain all batteries, before replacing (Leica and the no-name), I can't comment on the issue mentioned the earlier post.

However, I can't notice any difference in performance between the Leica branded batteries and the no-name ones.

For $10 a battery, you might as well give it a "shot". There may be some sample variation like some of the CV lens performance, noted on the forum:confused:, but I haven't experienced it.

YMMV

Hallo Andrew, I have the M8 and I even an extra battery. But thinking of how much Li-on cells and their dinky little electronic components cost I'm amazed there are no good quality options available.

Thanks for the replies everyone, 'baycrest' could you say where you got your batteries from? I've been using 3rd party Nikon batteries fo three years in the D70 and they've been absolutely fine - I don't even wonder whether I have an OEM battery or not in the body...

Hi Kully,
Congratulations on your m8.
If you consider selling your nokton 35 give me a ring:)

In my opinion the whole battery business is a scam.
i bought two batteries for my Canon 40d for $6,-. Yes $6, no misprint.
They look exactly the same as the original canon ones. They clearly are from the same factory. They are as good as the original.
I also bought a battery grip for a fraction of the price of an original. Again it looks exactly the same as the original except for the logo.

For me it is one big scam. Long life the internet and ebay.
Hope to meet you again in Barcelona.

Cheers,

I bought two from an ebay dealer from china. One was dud - took all night to charge and died after 2min of use. The other was perfectly fine from day one. I got a replacement for the dud and its been working fine since. I too drain my battery before replacing so can't comment on what other people have experienced.

I do feel my Canon generic d-slr batteries were equal/better to the branded ones. I can't help but have a nagging feeling there's only a small market for the m8 ones whilst the d-slr ones are a much larger market and the generic manufacturers maybe more reputable?

For 1/7 of the leica battery prices however i have no issues with the generic ones.

A quick search on ebay shows 1) ultra cheap chinese ones ~£5; 2) OEM? German ones ~£20. Maybe worth going for the German ones? http://shop.ebay.co.uk/items/__m8-1...mBattQ5fRLQQ_fromfsbZ?_trksid=p3286.m63.l1177

I am get one of the German ones to try too.

Hi Kully,

I bought 2 M8 batteries from China (Ebay) after I got my M8; after 4/5 months they were both completely dead. Unreliable when they were alive, too; was caught out more than a few times with drained batteries that quickly went from 'fully charged' to nothing at all.... Shame Leicas' are relatively expensive. Top tip, though- turn off auto review and dim the lights; i've noticed a much longer battery life.

Sure on ebay their selling for $11 now per battery. A bit of inflation since I bought it. The vendor isn't perfect, >50,000 sales with a 99.1% rating. So perhaps the 1% has been unhappy I guess .

The vendor is loo100us.

Good luck

Many camera and telephone stores recommend on the 1st charge of lithium batteries you leave the battery in the charger after the light goes out for an additional 8 hours so there's a slow drip charge to build up the battery memory. Yes others say balderdash and lithium batteries do not require such treatment. Most also say you should fully discharge your battery completely periodically (Go check out the Apple store battery tips sight which comments on this for you iPod).

I really don't know who's right or wrong, but I do follow the advice and I haven't had any problems with batteries dying prematurely. YMMV

Aerospace.
They are a British company operating from Guernsey and all went well with my purchase. Before I purchased I rang them and spoke with them. So they are where they say they are and this was confirmed by the details on the package I received a couple of days later.

I got my spare from Leica NJ - it was included in the camera when I received it post repair. Apparently they use these...

I just bought a replacement battery from the aforementioned Guernsey distributor- externally, it is exactly the same as the China Ebay battery....
