40.5 filters fit the Canon 50 1.8?

40 mm filters seem to be hard to get. Do 40.5 mm filters fit perhaps also?

Unfortunately, they won't. I used to make do with a 39mm with the threads wrapped in teflon tape, but that does not work as well either.

I bought a couple of 40mm to 40.5mm step-up rings on eBay for about $7 each. Lets me use the many 40.5mm filters for the Contax RF lenses on the Canons. Works great. I think that the eBay seller was heavystar.

Try "heavystar" on ebay for a 40mm to 40.5mm step up ring. Worked well for me. Here is a link to one:

One thing about the ring I got: the ring itself was fine but the silk-screened(?) label on it was a little crooked. Just enough to make me think I'd cross threaded it the first time I mounted it. Once I got that figured out; no problems!

I would definitely go with the 40-40.5 stepup ring. New 40.5 filters are easily found, and that will solve your next problem - the 40mm hood. That must be a new heavystar product. Used to be available only by SK Grimes, IIRC, and very expensive.

Another route may be to get standard and custom, BRASS Heliopan step-up rings (and filters/ hoods) from this guy, "Tim Rice" <tijori@rcn.com, in CA. He's prompt, reliable, and honest. Brass is a helluva lot better than aluminum and worth the extra $$$.

Bidding for the step-up ring has ended, but I sent a message to the seller and presume he has more available. Fedka seems a great place to get 40.5 filters and that metal hood looks awesome. If I get the ring I'll order the hood, a UV and a yellow filter. I'ld also like an orange or red one, but they're not listed.

I ordered mine from heavystar - a 40-40.5 conversion (also got one to take my Ultron up to 40.5 - to minimze the number of filters I need to carry). Buy it now from him, no bidding.
