Does ANYBODY make this size filter/lens cap? Needless to say, this is for a Canon screwmount lens.

the heavystar 40.5mm clipcap fits a treat on canons. And the 40-40.5mm step up also works at the expense of adding some size to the lens.

A week ago I bought a 40mm yellow filter from eb_y seller airwatches. I do not think that 40mm filters are produced today, this one is an old Walz filter.
40-40.5mm step up rings, new, are available from on the bay from store Heavy2stars Photo Gear (heavystar). 40.5 filters should be easier to find.

I just bought a 40mm hood from CameraQuest! So I'll need a 40mm UV. I'll just lurk on eBay until one pops up...it's not as important as the hood.

I have an original Walz set made for Canon. UV, yellow and red, plus an original Canon ND 4x. Planned on selling them together with my Canon 50/1,5. That has not worked out so far.

i have an original canon flat 40mm filter thats scratched and in not good shape optically. is there someone that can put in a modern multicoated filter in the old ring?

Bill, those 40mm hoods are 43mm hoods with 40>>43mm stepup rings on the end.

I've got a couple of Canon lenses w/ 40mm filter threads. I managed to find a 40mm skylight filter for one of them, I think it was from www.kevincameras.com. For the other, I found a 40-43mm step-up ring, and have been using 43mm filters and a 43mm hood. I'm going to follow-up on Kully's suggestion of a 40-40.5mm rig, though. Thanks for spreading the word about that!

About two years ago when I picked up a Canon 50mm 1.8 LTM I also faced the 40mm filter situation. Fortunately when I purchased the lens, the shop just gave me a 40mm protect filter. I ended up going to one of the big discount camera shops in Tokyo (Yodobashi or BICCamera) and placed a special order for a set of filters. Custom made and not order-able from outside Japan (as far as I remember). Also purchased a polarized filter. The lens hood (circular / screw on) was available on the shelf at Yodobashi (for example).
Yodobashi is a little easier to work with as they have their entire stock in the computer. When I couldn't find the 40mm hood in black (I only found the silver version), the sales guy checked the computer and said one black one was still available and sure enough it was hiding behind some other equipment.
Having learned that lesson, when I needed (wanted) a 28mm lens, I looked for one that took 40mm filters and picked up a nice Canon 28mm 2.8 LTM.
It took about 10 days for delivery of the special order (online at that time), but again only in Japanese. It was a little expensive...

What I have done for my Canon 50/f1.8 is to buy one of Heavystar's 40 to 40.5 mm step rings; I have a bunch of 40.5 filters and several hoods so I didn't want to duplicate those.

Being an Optical technician as well as a dispenser, I have done a few of these for some guys in Perth. Your best bet is to get a larger filter and get an optical lab to cut it down...but...try to match the thickness of the scratched lens with another lens the same thickness. To get one made would cost a small fortune. Peter

To elaborate on what's already been said, any competent optometrist can do it for less than $10 usd with your replacement filter -- if the filter holder has a screw-in filter retainer...
You turn the retainer counter-clockwise to remove the damaged glass -- and save it for size... You find, say, a 49mm, 52mm, 55mm or larger filter, remove the glass and take it to your optometrist...He willl use the damaged filter for size and make you a new one the same size and either, he or you, can drop it in the filter holder, screw-in the retainer and you have a brand-new 40mm filter!
I've done it many times...

canons filter appears to be stamped in there, hence the thiness. anyway ill try that, ill make it a red one since i have the walz skylight. also does anyone have a non ebay source for the 40-43mm step-ups?

I have a number of Canon filters for sale, and was planning for sale shortly.
They include at least a 40mm Skylight filter and even an 40mm ND4 filter, both in original boxes and plastic containers.
43mm Leitz slim filter (allows for mounting the hood on a 50mm Summilux) and 43mm Pallas ND4 filter as well. PM me if interested.
