40mm Rokkor/Summicron question

For the folks that have or had this lens & use(d) it on an M9 - any focus shift?

I'm looking for a 40 and want to pull the plug on either a summicron or rokkor, but am afraid of focus shift.

i bought a 40mm Summicron for my M8.1 last month....and absolutely LOVE it. I think this is the best secret in the world of Leica lenses. As good as any 35mm Summicron for 1/3rd the price! Everyone should have one.

i have not experienced any focus shift on the M8. It has been perfect thus far. I bought mine in Excellent/NM condition.

I have the Minolta version on a CL and CLE and cannot remember ever having focus shift. But normally, focus shift usually will happen w/ lenses faster than f2.

I have not seen it when used on my Ricoh gxr. Don't own a m9.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I've also been reading on the net that the Rokkor has slightly better coating... what I can't find is whether this means it takes better care of flare.

Just wondering what were your experiences.

the rokkor has new multi coating...the summicron has single coating.

look for a rollei if you a 40...it's a sonnar!

No I haven't. It just sounds like a gem for a compact & fast 35-ish. I've read several reports re: FS on the 40mm f1.4 however.

Joe - the Rollei is 2.8. The extra stop is what I'm looking for.

Oh... how can you tell CLE vs CL? There's one for sale at KEH & it doesn't mention which version it is. s/n maybe?

I have read that the CLE version is multi-coated. I don't know for sure. I have owned 2 CLE versions. Both super lenses.
The Nokton f1.4/40mm is also excellent. I just prefer the smaller size of the Rokkor and find the OOF area less wild.

Cle version has the sn on the barrel. All others have sn on the front trim ring of the lens.

The bad about the summicron version is the weird filter size. Wasn't it a series 5.5? The Minoltas all used 40.5.

I'm trying to avoid having to deal with focus shift. I shot with a 35mm f1.4 years ago on an M8 and the shift was so bothersome I didn't want to touch the lens again. The 40mm f1.4 would be ideal, but the thought dealing with having to know the lens in terms of finer focus adjustments is keeping me away.

the 40 and the 35 are very different lenses.

the summicron filter size is 5.5 but there are cheap adapters on ebay that convert it to 40.5...

Yep the CLE version is multi coated. Not sure if CL version was or not.

I've had both, and still have the Rokkor. I've encountered no focus shift. Compared to the 50/1.5 Sonnar, which has a reputation for focus shift, I think that on general principles, the 40/2 lenses, being both wider and slower, would not be strong candidates for focus shift anyhow, owing to their greater DOF.
