What is the cheapest flatbed scanner that has a large enough area to scan 4x5? Obviously looking at the Canon/Epson range initially.

If your looking to buy new go for the Epson v700. If used then the 4990 gets rave reviews (it was the model before the v700). I use a very old epson 1640su. It does a decent job for web scans. You should be able to pick one up for under $100 (make sure to get the film scanning adapter with it).

I have an epson 2450 which came with a 4x5 holder - works for me for large format scans and should be dirt cheap used. However, I'd love a V700:D

I have an Epson 2450 also. It was less than $100 and does a great job w/ 4x5. 120 film it does ok, hopeless at 35mm. Very useful for proofing, web stuff, etc. I've printed some nice photos from 120 and 4x5 scans.

Just a heads up that at least yesterday Epson had the 4990 at there clearance store with free shipping for ~$250.

Why?

They always do that AFTER I purchase something else. No worries. My Epson 1680 does everything I need. 35mm-120-4x5-8x10 on the glass.

Does the Epson 4990 have decent film holders? I have the 1640SU which does decent scans but the film holders are worthless.
