strange thing, fungus at outside front element, and not possible to remove, too... I always thought it appears at one of the inside back elements. Anyone have seen this before?

Not a surprising price considering the front element damage. I think this is a lens people buy for image quality first and foremost. They seem to turn up fairly regularly at auction, so I suspect a lot of prospective buyers just decided to wait for a better one to come along.
