50 Summilux pre-asph - deloverly

Why do you want to replace the tabbed cron with the collapsible? I have both. Maybe I can help you compare.

so, if i were to say i liked the canon shot best, would that make me a freak?

i looked at the pics before i noted which lens took what pic...

Nope, not a freak nor a heretic. There's more than one guy I know (and whose opinions I trust a great deal) who will tell you that, prior to the 50/1.4 asph, that the Canon 50/1.4 was the best f1.4 rangefinder lens available when shot at open apertures...and shooting open is sorta the reason to have an f1.4 lens :)

Are you trying to get our Nikkors in a twist?

Tom

Gabriel, in the tree photos, as you look at the transition from leaves to grass, dead center of the picture, the oof on the Summilux gets swirly, almost as if about to spin. My preference is for the Summicron, but I'd be tempted to keep both of these lenses, as using them in b&w may render different results.

It's interesting with the tabbed Summicron that the highlights of the tree trunk on the left stand out best followed by the Summilux and lastly the Canon50/1.2. I think this indicates higher micro-contrast.

That would be really deeply appreciated, Nick. I almost got a collapsible 'cron two weeks ago, but unfortunately it had a few coating scratches -- is that common in those lenses?

I have decided I'm going to bite the bullet and keep my tabbed Summicron, unless some emergency comes up in the near future; well, the jury's out on which one would go, but the 'cron is staying with me, and that's the word right now; I've decided I've worked my @ss off and I can say that I've gotten to this stage where I can say: "Summicron for daylight, Summilux for night".

How's that?

It's those details that make you think, don't they? That swirly effect is, I believe, evidence that the optical design is indeed from the late 1950s; this formula was supposedly redesigned in the early 60s, but I think it was more of a tweak than anything. That oof swirl is a signature of the Summitar too. I am keeping both. My arsenal just got more interesting, and will be more if I learn how to tame my Summar (I'll post some pics later this weekend).

They don't call the latest 50 Summicron one of the top three best normal 35mm lenses for nothing. Sometimes I think it's too sharp, but hand-held shooting counteracts that; I'm sure the optical engineers aren't too happy about that.

If I find that the performance of the Summilux at f/2 is about the same as my tabbed 'cron at f/2 in real-life hand-held conditions (well, mine anyway), I'll be very excited (and confused!!)

Here are two shots I developed last night. I only just received the tabbed Summicron. Perhaps, Xtol wasn't the best choice to highlight the differences in these two lenses, but, it is what it is. I'll be shooting slides this weekend.
The collapsible is known for cleaning scratches and haze. The one used here has some haze and very slight cleaning marks.
Left tabbed Summicron; right collapsible Summicron.

Edit: forgot to add that these are unmanipulated images.

Oh-oh, Nick, looks like the attachments have disappeared throughout RFF. Jorge has posted a notice about it. Can't wait to see until they're restored...

May I suggest that you just post your "attachments" to your respective gallerys until Jorge gets things fixed. You can delete them from the gallery later.

According to Jorge he's restored all the pictures, but I just don't see that in most of the latest threads. I'll wait to repost my pics tomorrow, to see if anything's changed by then, otherwise, we're just going to have to do what Jorge said we have to do (repost attachments).

I've just got back after going away for the weekend. I've reattached the photos.

Thanks Nick. You're right, not much of a difference, perhaps only the contrast in those pictures. So the coating scratches are common, eh? Hmmm...that's the only reason I returned mine, and it had some very fine, hardly noticeable scratches, so I guess my trip to the "shop" tomorrow will serve for three things now.

I scanned a few more rolls this week, but this one I really liked; I shot it Friday, scanned Saturday (absolutely no color manipulation -- Fuji X-tra 400):
