I find the 50mm Lux' ASPH lens shade whimpy. Is it whimpy or just my perception? What say ye?

I agree. I've put a folding rubber lens hood on mine - it doesn't seem to cause problems and gives more protection. So far, I haven't tested it with and without to see how the rubber hood affects flare.

Is it a sliding shade? I use the LHSA version and it uses a screw-in shade. 😎

mine is the E46, w/ sliding hood. I would have preferred the E43 LHSA but those are much harder to find.

Does the sliding hood lock in position (like on the 2/75) ? If not just use some electrical tape to fix it in front position. It will do the job and depending on the color (black?) no one will notice.

You are correct. It is also true that the 50mm ASPH Summilux is highly flare-resistant. However if you use a filter on the lens, it may cause flare. I was under the impression that hood on the ASPH version locks into place as well. (The 75mm APO Summicron inherited this feature and the basis of its optical computation from the 50). Is the locking design insufficient to hold it in place?

I have the E43 LHSA version, but using filters on it is a pain! Very few will work with the detachable Leica shade. Leica’s IR/CUT filter is the standard size with a cut-out so the shade locks to the filter instead of the lens (and the shade easily slips off). If I were to go back and do it again I probably would opt for the standard version (in silver chrome, of course).
To your question, I think the standard E46 collapsible shade is fine (it does lock into place with a small twist) – and it offers all the flair protection the lens needs.
BTW, I absolutely can't stand those cheesy rubber shades – Presspass, I don't know how you can stand it!

If it locks that's good - I didn't know that. On my 75/2 the lock stays in place, it works qute well. Bit of a shallow hood but the same question exists for the 75 as the 50 - how much shade does the lens need?

yes, as stated above, it locks into place but there ain't much hood there...
your pt on a filter causing flare is interesting....since I have filters on many of my lenses. some people say to keep the filters off unless its a dirty environment.
A few yrs ago in i shot some portraits with my 50 Summilux pre-asph (circa 2000) and it flared badly on a few shots. I recall using a filter on the lens.
I've got a heliopan UV filter on my 50 Summilux ASPH since its such a pricey lens. However its mine and I have the choice of removing it (the filter), short of dirty environment. ditto this w/ my 35mm summilux ASPH. I hate keeping expensive glass exposed.

I also have the 75mm Summicon - it's shade is functionally the same as the 50mm asph Summilux. It's all the shade the lens needs.

It seems good to me. I agree that a detachable shade would perhaps be better but I have found my Summilux ASPH lenses, 35mm and 50mm to be the most flare resistant lenses I have ever used. Expensive but superb. Joe

I will say the 50mm pre-asph Summilux has historically been a flair-hound.
BTW, Leica says protection filters are not necessary in normal shooting environments because the coatings they use are so hard (this applies to modern lenses only - from the early 1990's).
Currently, my lenses all have IR/CUT filters on them - before the M8 they were protected with UVa filters (primarily due to my acute paranoia) - but flare has rarely been an issue for me.

A few years ago I attended a Leica street shooting seminar featuring Australian photographer, David Oliver. Based upon Leica's recommendation, David Oliver does not use filters.
When asked how he cleans his lenses, He explained "This what Leica recommends…" he then picked up his Leica MP, turned it toward him, pulled his shirt tail out, and dry rubbed the front of the Noctilux mounted to the camera.

I use a very nice CV 43mm screw-in shade on mine. It is also short and works very well.
