So my wife caught me by complete surprise and gave me a plustek 7600i SE for Christmas.
Thank you honey
I've been putting it through it's paces for a couple of hours and have been very pleased with the quality except for one major problem. It's not scanning the entire negative! I always have one side of the negative not get scanned. Has anyone else encountered this problem? Or do you think it's time for a return?
This particular shot lost the right side of the image.

Stupid question: is the negative holder "locked in" when placed in the scanner? Meaning when you have it inserted, it clicks into place and there is resistance when pulling or pushing the holder?

Stefan, that is not a stupid question! The holder is locked in place and there is proper resistance. The negative also covers the entire hole in the negative holder. The problem occurs with slides too.

does the unit have a transport locking mechanism and have you unlocked it?

No it does not. I have done some further testing using the basic quick scan and am able to get full scans. It appears that silverfast is the offender. I was expecting to have to buy Vuescan anyway and this will probably just seal the deal...

That's way too much.
I was missing about 2-3mm from my negs and after a lengthy debate with Plustek (they weren't particularly helpful to be honest) I opened my unit and re-aligned it myself with some washers. The scanner head moves along two rails that you can put washers to the end of. However, in your case I would guess that its a software/firmware issue as this is way too much to be a hardware issue. I'd send it back as its under warranty.

Different problem, but I had to file my negative carrier to get the entire picture (still need to adjust some more.) The scanner worked properly across the whole frame, it was just that the windows on the carrier didn't line up properly/weren't always big enough.

Like you said, just skip this mystery and get vuescan. I've got the same scanner and have been getting way better results with it.

+1 for vuescan, I picked up a 7600i a few weeks ago and silverfast is useless. Constant crashing and just a pain in the ass to use. Im running mac OSX Lion and downloaded the latest version of vuescan and it works with the drivers from silverfast already being installed and works a charm. I highly recommend switching over

I also started with filing the negative carrier, but I couldn't shift the image enough. Shame as the fix via opening the box and using washers on the rails was much easier...

Did you try to scan as a positive? This sometimes solves the issue, and you can invert the colors in photoshop.

I've scanned as positives and negatives in silverfast and it makes no difference. Using the quickscan method produces usable scans though. I expected that I would end up buying Vuescan so I will probably give the demo a try tomorrow and contact Silverfast support. If neither of these options works, than it might be time for a return.

Has anyone encountered an issue where it seemed either the film tray or the scanning head was skewed? The 7600i that I received today has this issues where each frame was skewed. I tried it on two different computers running vuescan and silverfast and they both have the same output, leading to my assumption that it's a hardware issue.
