85mm 1.8

I've used the 85/1.9 (black) as well as 85/1.8 (black).

The 1.9 is an okay lens. The bokeh is so-so. The 1.8 is a truly exceptional lens. And it's short for it's focal length (but pretty heavy).

As mentioned above, the 1.8 is great even wide-open. I never used a hood with mine, and never noticed any flare issues.

In the end, I sold the 85/1.8 and used the money towards a Leica 75/1.4, this was mostly because I already had a small 90/4 lens for travel, and wanted to try the Summilux.

I think that the 85/1.8 is a better lens wide open than the Summilux. But, it's also more "conventional", i.e., it doesn't have that dreamy, creamy Summilux special-ness.

Mind you, stop the Summilux down to f/2, and it's the equal of the Canon 85/1.8.

Hey Yaron! Your former 85mm f/1.8 is still in good hands!

So if you have a choice now between the Summilux-M 75mm f/1.4 and the Canon 85mm f/1.8 LTM, which will it be?

Cheers,

hehe, or put another way, would you rather have a Canon and a grand, or the summi? 😉

or would you rather have both the 1.5 and the 1.8 canon or a summi?

Hi Benny, I'm really glad to hear that you've still got the lens and are happy with it.
Answering your question isn't so simple. First, I got the 75mm Summilux before prices went totally crazy, so money isn't a factor in my lens choice.
The answer has to do with how I pair up lenses, I love the 35mm +75mm combo, and for that I have two Summiluxes.
For lighter weight traveling around, I carry three SMALL lenses: 21mm SA + 50mm Elmar-M + 90mm f/4.
But of course, in the ideal world, I would love to still own every great lens!

It's the "T-60" clamp on metal hood, indeed.

Thanks! The T-60 and T-60-2 are actually generic hoods. It fits all 58mm filter thread size Telephoto lenses from the Canon LTM range. I was under the impression that there is a specifically marked version like they do for the rest of the lenses.

Thanks for the clarification.

Cheers,

I loved my chrome Canon 85mm/1.9, but when I got the 75mm/1.4 Summilux, I liked it less than before. This is life.
