He's going to keep and use. it was his grandfather's.

I did not notice this fact! A motor must be quite rare.

Does the motor have the actuating arm? It will still work without it, but not the way in which it was intended.
Motor is not especially rare - if it were for a IIIc, however, then that's a different story. Still, if it has the arm and is in good order, it's worth about $800. Bit of a pain to use, but it's a neat accessory.

Motor or no motor, rare Leica or not, that's a terrific find in an attic. And when it's your grandfather's, it's even better!

Good news on the arm! It's interesting to use -- instead of releasing the shutter with the shutter button, you press down on the lever in the front. I've had three of them, and they definitely add a unique touch to LTM camera use. Mind you, I would not have wanted to be a working photojournalist back in the 1930's trying to use it.
BTW make sure your buddy knows to remove the shutter release collar before attaching the arm to the camera.

For proper cycling of the camera and activation of the shutter the motor and camera combo really do require the arm to be there.
I'm still looking for an arm so I can use for my IIIb+MOOLY set as it was intended to.
Luckily I have a spare base for the IIIb.
