A complementary body for my A7R

My A7R is modified with a thin sensor filter replacement and converted to full spectrum IR. It's been a great lightweight body to use for native-mount as well as adapted M and F mount lenses.

I'd like to get a second body to complement my A7R, but I would like to get something other than an A7R. In your opinion, which Sony body best complements the A7R?

I plan to use the same lenses, but primarily native mount lenses. I don't plan to have it modified.

Possible complementary features:

- I'm not really into video, but always been curious.
- Faster AF for street would be nice.
- Others?

I personally pair my A7R2 with a Ricoh GR as it suits my travel and documentary style of photography.

You did mention that you wish to use the same lenses, so I suppose the obvious option is using the a6000/a6300 bodies since they share the same mount and the same batteries. AF and IBIS on the a6300 should make it quite a bit more versatile than the original A7R.

The other option would be to spring for the latest RX100m5. You get a blazing fast pocket camera with a bright 24-70 equivalent zoom. The only limitation would be the small 1" sensor size - which might not cut it if you are used to (and/or require) the high resolution output of the A7R. Question is - do you print large sizes or are most of your images digital-only?

I do make large prints (on metal) and have the A7R (and D800e) for that.
I'd like to be able to produce large prints from the 2nd body as well, although I can work around that if it has compelling features (e.g., excellent video, should I decide to get into that).


What I envision is a two-body kit, one with an AF lens and the other with an adapted lens. Given that, both the A6300 (or the a6500 due next month) would be suitable, as well as the RX100 M5.

Yeah, if I do decide to get into video, I think that would be the obvious choice.

To just try out the Sony AXx system, I found an inexpensive used A7 not ii. Reading the reviews from the first series and using the A7, I am happy with that decision, and saved a good bit of $ over a used A7R, S, or ii. I am having a lot of fun with the A7 and classic lenses that had been gathering dust in the closet. I'm not missing the 12MP vs the A7R (Still planning to keep my Nikon D810 and system), but the IBIS in the A7II would be nice, I think.

If I were to expand the Sony system to a 2nd body, the A7Rii seems to be a compelling choice.

the r2 is down to 2.2k for new international version. It's far superior to all the others including the A9, really, for image output. Better for video. Internal 4k. Great high ISO. 42MP, yikes.

But I would want at least 1 digital M body.

r2 also makes the best mod. 🙂

In fact the r2 mod is probably the strongest M lens shooter in the world today.

80mb uncompressed RAWs are huge, but a dream to edt.
