would it/i be crazy to sell one of the zeiss ikons and buy a used rd1?

that is likely the only way i could afford one.

i don't mind digital especially since i would still be shooting film along side it.
i do like the idea of being closer to a final image without the need for processing and scanning time.

i am nowhere doing this without some long thought first.

Well, the M8 is too expensive for me, and I think that a better digi rangefinder camera than the RD1 will be coming along eventually.

That's the thing with computer technology including digital cameras, you never have to rush into buying, as improvements and or lower prices are never far away.

People are having troubles with RD1 and ZIs, but Admin may have a better perspective, and your lenses will still work, and I'd suggest another to do

Joe, if you really need digital, get a DSLR. Cheap(ish), hassle free(ish). You can even use those lovely OM lenses.

I'm not sure what you're using to scan but I just picked up a Nikon Coolscan V ED and am loving it. It scans quickly and handles all the film I shoot (except D3200) well. The scans I'm getting from my 100 ISO films (B&W and colour) are much better in my opinion than what my friends gets from his Digital Rebel XTi.

It's a bit of a hassle to scan, but not too much. If you're scanning your own stuff now and are looking to get rid of that step in the workflow then ignore me!

that's what i do here...i think i have a good idea and then i write it out in a post and listen to your responses.

works for me most of the time.

Well Joe, I can only speak from experience and I did the R-D1 thing a short time ago after all the M8 talk got me thinking of a 'digital-M', and am having a really great time with it, and this from someone as you know has a rather big investment in Leica rangefinder gear.

Part of that advantage is that I finally have a digital body at a reasonable price ( new for $1,700 ) to use my M-mount lenses on - fun, fun, fun.

The camera is everything I could hope for. I like the way it works and except for a slight out vertical alinement that I adjusted easily in a few minutes myself its been perfect.

I still have my Leicas for film which I'll always have and love to use, and medium format gear, but it sure is nice to just make images that are easy to review and share, quick to print and put on computer, shooting in RAW have color and B&W along with any ISO I need at the finger tips ( literally because the R-D1 is very analog in control use ).

If you want that digital option I think the R-D1 is a great way to do it, its not an M8 but for what I use it for it will pay for itself in film savings in a short time and the start-up cost is reasonable.
