A few photos with a Canon 28mm/3.5

I just got back a roll of ERA 100 B&W film from developing and scanning. I used a Leica Standard with a Canon 28mm/3.5. This lens is an excellent alternative to more expensive 28mm lenses in LTM/M mounts.

I took some photos on the Sound side of Pensacola Beach. The sand has interesting graphical formations there.


The Chinese B&W film is not bad at all. I had it developed and scanned by Dwayne's Photo.

How many 28mm lenses LTM/M are there? [not 29mm]

I have the Canon 28mm/3.5 and the Rokkor 28mm/2.8 but that's it for me.
Somebody will have the Orion 28mm lens, and some will have the CV 28mm. Of course, someone will have the Leica 28mm lens and also the recent addition by Zeiss.

Maybe ... this could be a test topic indeed. Let's wait for volunteers.

Since I left Virginia to Florida I have not seen ice in Pensacola.

Nice photos Raid. Dwaynes did a decent job of developing the prints. Do you happen to know what developer they used on the ERA 100?

Hey, that's not a bad lens, there, Raid, and those are nice photos. The first one has a kind of retro look to it (I don't know how else to describe it). Number 6 appears to have a scratch (I'm noticing these things more these days b/c I've been doing some printing, and consequently having to "fix" scans in PS). It would be interesting to see how this lens performs w/ XP2 or BW400CN; that would be a different sort of lens test.🙂

I don't know what all this talk is about ice. We don't have that in Sacramento, either. Just don't tell me that the temp was in the 80s...

No doubt that was a typo. There is the Kobalux & the same lens by other names, surely there is a 28mm Nikkor, I have a 28mm Komura in LTM that I am convinced was busted the day I bought it in 1970, are we limited to LTM 28mm lenses?

gb: I recommend Dwayne's Photo. They have redone [for free] this roll for me since I saw overlapping scanned frames. The images each have file size 4 MB.
I don't know what they use for b&W.

You are right, Steve. I also am seeing scratches more frequently these days.
We had temperatures in the high 70's, but it fluctuates.

I forgot about Kobalux.
I can extend the test to Contax mount lenses since I now have Contax cameras. With wide angle lenses, even Nikon lenses would be fine on a Contax body.

How doy ou like the Komura lens?

Raid I love the Canon 28/3.5 as well. It's good with color film too.

BTW for those keeping the list, there is a Kobalux 28/3.5 in LTM as well -- pricey, uncommon, but sharp.

The last one in particular is outstanding: good composition, a very nice scene, and really well exposed (we can see your daughters' faces, which appear slight shaded, yet the sand on the beach is not overexposed). Hats off to you! I want to play around w/ unsharpen on PS myself.

How about posting here some images taken with your 28mm lenses?

OK, I'll bite. Here's one of Convict Lake, in the Sierra Nevada mountains, taken last July w/ a CV 28/3.5. I used PS to take care of some dust spots on the scan (thank you, Costco), and to crop it very slightly. Film is XP2.

I have not tried using my 28 for street shots or portraits yet.

The photo is sharp and beautiful in all aspects. The lens seems to be a good one, but only you can tell finer differences from looking at large sized prints or the negatives. I love C-41 B&W.

It is really challengng to first balance film exposure and then balance the settings for the scans for details in the faces when you have white sand and sunshine. With "autoadjust" the results look great if you have a busy image and without too much open space with white sand. If it is a typical 40%-60% sand scene, the sand would be washed out with autoadjust. If I use CURVES, the sand turns too dark and is not anymore as white as it really is.

Santa brought me a new printer for Christmas, and I've been having fun printing some of my work. I've been working on cleaning up this particular shot, and am getting close to a printed image that I like. The CV 28/3.5 is plenty sharp, but I have to say that I like the way your Canon 28 renders, too.

The Canon 28mm/3.5 is a really tiny lens, if you have not seen one. It is heavy for its size,and it does not really require use of lens hood.
