I bought last night a Nikon S3 2000 set, so having such information is important to me. It is from a trusted RFF Member who rates the set as mintish.
I take good care of my camera equipment, so hopefully my S3 will last many years. Else, I will contact whoever is on the board of Nikon and I will tell them some things they ought to know about.

@Tom: Just as you said – it was the third pinhole that did it for me. I patched two holes, but the third one – more like a tear – led to replacing the curtains. If you plan on changing to ti shutter curtains when you've counted to three, you might want to set aside the parts now. My guess is you have some used F curtains lying around, but if you'd want new ones, they're apparently hard to locate. Mine are a new pair for F3.
@Raid: By somewhat unlikely coincidence, Tom, Alfred, and I developed tears &/or pinholes in NIB or LNIB black 2000 S3s (to be precise, 2002 'Limited Editions') that came on the market not long ago. Acording to Jon, this hadn't been a problem before. The usual explanation – sun-burn through a WA lens – didn't seem to apply. Perhaps during the 12 years of their youth, they hadn't been stored properly. It could have been a humidity problem, because (as Jon mentioned above) mine had also developed or grown some gunk in its rangefinder. So the whole 'new' camera got ti curtains and a CLA.
I got mine from Igor, who I believe has Eastern European connections; so I'm blaming it on careless storage by international thieves from a shadowy Russian mafia. Not being photographers, they hid their loot in a musty cave. (As good an explanation as any?)
Other than this one issue in a few black S3 2000s that seem to have been marketed at one time, there's no wider concern about quality/durability of Nikon RF bodies. They're built like tanks.

Well I don't think Nikon will now care much about what their S3 2000, SP 2005 and S3 2002 customers and users do think Nikon ought to know about. Those RF cameras were made for a very tiny niche market (nostalgic people being mostly collectors) ; nothing close to any powerful lobby group in sight here.Else, I will contact whoever is on the board of Nikon and I will tell them some things they ought to know about.
Another thing to know about the S3 2000 regards the lens mount (under a certain serial number the lens mount will cause problems with external mount lenses : Jonmanjiro has documented the case quite well here already).

The deal was a good deal . I don't live in Florida so no free shipping .
You could always sell the s3 body and keep the millennium nikkor for your Armadeo adapter .
I think Nikon lost money on the s3/sp reissue series .
I had for a brief time the sp set - it was beautifully made truly a nikon in every sense . Plus modern coated finder ,
I sold it as it was so nice it just sat on a shelf .
Was afraid of damaging its value - so continued to shoot with my s2 .
I think you will like the s3

I believe in being proactive, even if it may not lead to any immediate results. Thanks for the tip to watch the lens mount!

Nikon's loss is our gain.
This is also how I see it. I will see if I can sell off the S3 2000, and I will keep it if nobody wants it. The lens, however, is mine to enjoy! These d$%^#@ lens comparisons that I have done in past years create a GAS-Virus that somehow lingers inside my head. Someone sent me a Millenium 50/1.4 for the lens comparisons, and I still have beautiful photos from it. Now I bought this lens. It happened also with other lenses that I tested. It is curse!

If and when you contact whoever is on the board of Nikon to tell them some things they ought to know about, be sure to skip the board of Nikon Inc. as its just the local North American sales subsidiary for the Imaging Company division of Nikon Corporation (take a look at this chart to see what I mean), and the board members there most likely won't have a clue what you're talking about (just like their customer support people as has been mentioned earlier in this thread). Best to go direct to Nikon Corporation in Japan, and in Japanese language for best effect (English language emails are troublesome to read at the best of times and often get deleted or ignored

I hope that I will never have to do it.
I prefer having a Nikon that is not a lemon.
Google translation could help with the letter or email in Japanese.

Hmmm maybe not so helpful. English <> Japanese translations done with translation software are usually ok for single words and short phrases, but notoriously bad for longer sentences. The point of the sentence ends up lost or vague at best.
Below is an example of Google Translate. The source text is an auction for an S3 Limited Edition Black kit currently listed on the Yahoo Japan auctions here. The auction is up to 152,000 yen. Will be interesting to see what it finishes at in 12 hours time

Condition of the item
Removed from the moisture proof storage occasionally, such as looking through the viewfinder and press the shutter sky indoors, I was kept as a collection.
As you can see the photo, there are scratches on the bottom "fishing bracket" on the right side when viewed from the front.
Then, near the bottom of the lid panel display ISO sensitivity, from both sides of the front and rear, there is a 5 mm scratches position (within the range of the film).
I think the wound above goods can be exhibited as "mint" Without Although it is used.
After the receipt, "I explained, different from the picture, etc." If you are not satisfied with the product, only within 3 days, I will receive a return.

Yeah, that scratched fishing bracket is a deal-breaker.

I wonder why this got moved over here? Except for a couple of off-topic posts, it was specifically about Nikon RF issues.

Maybe because of the "hole" issue, it is viewed as a repair thread.
