A Lesson Learned

I guess I'm just used to removing them when I take the camera out of the bag or change lenses. When stuff goes back in the bag, the caps go back on. That is, when I'm actually walking around with the camera I'm generally "capless." 😀

Ditto: I have lost exactly five shots this year because of caps. One would have been fantastic, but that is okay.

I lose more shots due to forgetting to fire the M6 before putting it in the bag (stupid lack of a shutter lock).

Old thread, old problem, same here 🙁

Now that I got used on my 1st RF camera, it is daily business to get it out of the bag and... forget the cap!

It doesn't even help that the compact Ricoh's have the light meter on the lens, because it was an available light situation, where the meter in the viewer displays < F2.8 even if the cap were off.

Lesson learned. Will buy a filter next weekend!
(amusing thread, anyway)

you guys are too much. I thought honeymoon exploits would get me banned! Lol! There were no complaints from the mrs. Ha ha!

Woman to complain in Italy? 😱

You must be joking 😀

I carry my camera and lenses with the caps on but I don't remember I ever shot with the cap on.
somebody said before the caps prevent Leica shutter curtain burns - I heard that before and I guess it's true, especially if you have focussed infinity (they say).
Sad you lost so many pictures - you could of rewind the film and start over once you noticed the cap was on all day.

Twenty rolls all shot from the balcony of your hotel room, that's some impressive shooting 😉

I use lens caps simply because they're much cheaper, I use cheap generic caps, than a good quality UV filter. I also use them as I'll often carry a couple of lenses in my coat pockets along with all the lint, dust and biscuit crumbs rather than in my bag.

Whichever lens is on the camera will be capless whilst roaming/photographing and will have the cap put back on when I change lens. It's easy and takes no time at all. I use decent UV filters to enable me to continue photographing in inclement weather/conditions and would never worry about the filter detracting from the overall quality of the lens itself; my pictures would need to increase dramatically in quality for this to be an issue!

However, I take no great pride in admitting that when it comes to my work cameras I will often be a little less careful. On some jobs I simply don't have time to worry about front and rear caps and will have to 'dump' a lens straight into the bag in order to cut down the time I'm without a lens on my camera. Obviously I clean this kit with care on a regular basis but my priorities and circumstances are usually very different when shooting RF instead of SLR.

This is especially a problem with the Mamiya 6 as the meter is above the lens, not TTL, so the shutter sounds completely normal even with the cap on - lots of personal experience on this matter.
