Picked it up recently, in very good condition.

I love the black, and the bright clear rangefinder.

Of all my non-Leica M rangefinders this looks the best. And with the Canon 50mm f1.2 + original hood it's a stunner

Original black
Thanks - I thought it a beauty too and I have quite a few Canon rangefinders that cost me more than this body - but this one has the look

I can't tell for sure if it is a factory paint job or otherwise. Even from comparing it to those photos.

I have to admit when I bought it I had no idea black was rare, I just thought it looked good. I hot it from a very reputable and reliable used rangefinder dealer in London I use a lot, I think for around 200 pounds which I thought was a good price for what looked like a good condition nice rangefinder. It all works fine o I'm happy.

The lens hood for the 50mm I am told is rare, and I pad silly money for it (about 80 pounds) from ebay, but its cute.

If you paid 200 pounds and it's a factory job, you need a license to steal. If it is a repaint, it's still a very fine value. Maybe it's a CRR Luton repaint job since it's a UK purchase?

The clue to me that it's a repaint are the chrome lugs, rather than the Canon factory's mistake to paint them. How long would the paint last? Duh....

However, I'm NO expert--just my observation.

I believe the camera is a repaint, but a good value nevertheless, at the price paid. Since the true black is scarce to rare, it is pricey, and the wear factor has to matter. As a repaint, you have a beautiful camera that you can still use for its intended purpose, whie gathering longing looks from the bystanders.

I'm content with my chrome, and my meager bank balance....

It's a black paint over the original chrome (the chrome shows up under the black finish at the corner over the viewfinder window). Looks very good, but paint over chrome can't hold up well, in general, and quickly gets a pesky flaky aspect. Just because there isn't primer under the paint.

I still can't figure out, why some people want to paint good looking original chrome cameras black.
