A trusty Leica owner, do you carry extra body or extra lens?

Leica used to be Rolls-Royce, but yes you're right, nowadays they've gone modern Aston Martin instead.

Did you know that Aston Martin have signed-up to buy Mercedes-Benz engines and other components?

I'll stick to Rolls-Royce, even with a BMW engine and transmission. The new '200EX' model looks interesting. It's smaller and cheaper than the current line up, as in smaller than an aircraft carrier and cheaper than a space shuttle.

yes you might be right... im certainly leaning towards the r4m

I like my R4M a lot but only with wide angle lenses...the 50 frameline is .52 and very annoying compared to a Leica M 50 frameline. So if you get the R4m, put on a 21 lens and you'll love it...it has the 21 frameline so no need for the external finder.

When I take my Rolls-Royce out for a drive I don't take a spare car as backup.

Same goes for decent cameras.

I've been taking my M6 and 40mm everywhere, with an Olympus Stylus Epic in the bag or car as a lightweight, cheap back-up that also can go out on canoes or into a ski jacket, etc.

The 40mm is a really nice way to avoid needing both a 35 and 50mm lens!

I carry extra camera with me. Usually two when im traveling or out on a documentary project....

My 5D with 35/2 and Leica M6 with 35/2.

I have just "rediscovered" my (exactly my wife's 😱) M-Rokkor 40/2.0 (my guess it is the CLE version). A small (but still convenient to use), very sharp and not overly contrasty lens. Perfect match for the M6 and covers quite exactly that what I see through the VF wearing glasses.

well, given a choice, of course I'll love 1 lens, 1 body. But the possibility of a body breaking down is scary. imagine a long trip back with no photos. as for the lens, im a 50mm guy and can usually live with just a 50mm. But it happened to me I wasnt quite wide enough to cover the buildings in the narrow streets of Tokyo.

I have had great trips with an M and a 50, like India/Nepal. Now my most used combination when traveling will be my M8 + Mamiya RZ67, or a light 4X5.

The last combination is really something I think I will stick to - there is often 5-10-15 motifs I would like to do as technically perfect as possible on a trip, and the M8 is perfect as a sketch-pad and light-meter for the 4X5.

Never thought I would end up with a combination like that, but in a strange way the digital age has prompted me to get into hard-core film work... Nothing digital can beat a 4X5 scanned to about 180mpix, and it fits in nicely with the sharp files and punch I get from the M8!

Last big trip I took a IIIf and Bessa R3A with CV lenses of 15mm, 25mm, 40mm and 75mm. The IIIf was fitted with a VCII meter. Volour neg in the IIIf and B&W in the Bessa
Both worked fine, but metering and swapping lens mounts for the IIIf has prompted me to buy an R4A for the forthcoming European trip.

So, two cameras, the same 4 lenses and my wife will use either the Canon Ixus digital or the Finepix APS format film camera for whatever she wants to shoot. She carries hers and my two bodies and lenses fit in a quite small shoulder bag.

I pick a camera - usually my Leica MP - and then as many lenses that will fit in the bag that I am able to bring. I try to vary the lenses as much as possible so that I am ready for all possible settings. If I carry a small camera bag, then a body and 2 lenses (35mm and 75mm). If my larger bag, then up to 4 lenses (usually 24mm, 50mm, 75mm and 135mm). It's all in the lens.....
