Pompeii is one of my inspirations for the trip... About 5yrs ago my parents toured the Greek isles & Italy & their pics of the 'petrified' people have never left my mind. I took Italian for a couple of years in school, so I'm hoping that will help me get a crust to eat & a beer or two

I wasn't all that impressed with Vatican City. I was more interested with getting a bottle of Corona from the snack van just outside!!
Gotta say that if you go to Rome, make sure you pop by a shop called Polvere Di Tempo (or something like that, I'll find the address). It's full of oddities, and handmade compasses and stuff. The best bit? Leather-bound notebooks!!
http://www.polvereditempo.com/index1.html - you can buy over the internet, but their shop is my favourite kind; dark, full of wooden and leather handcrafted items, run by a father and son I think.

I'm going to Sicily in April and want to spend a 2-3 days in Rome on the way back. Do you have any suggestions for good street shooting?

Ash said:Peter, I've been to Rome twice (and both trips seeing Pompeii, one trip staying in sorrento and seeing Herculaneum also). Italy is brilliant, I really liked it though I found Greece was more to my liking![]()

Anywhere!!
Go to the Trevy Fountain, and the surrounding fountains and areas. Watch your pockets on the metro, but you'll love it for some candid's as people rush on and off (there's NO space to shoot while you're on there).
Uhhhhrrrrmmm I forget the names of the streets, but if you have 3 days then walk off the beaten track and any of the alleys become amazing scenic holiday shots.
I was more interested in the beer and ice cream. Try the pistachio flavour. In fact, try every flavour you can find, you'll never taste ice cream like that ever again. Also lurking near the ice cream and fountain areas means you'll catch some great 'embarassing' and funny candid moments.
Don't forget the slow film, it gets very bright.

ok I just found the college booklet from the second time I went (April 2005). Here's the low-down on my trip and which parts I found interesting. WATCH OUT FOR PICKPOCKETS:
Hotel Archimide - FANTASTIC for the cost. Really nice. Well to be honest it was waaay nicer than the hostel first time around. 4 Star. http://www.romeguide.it/alberghi/archimide
Colosseum - an obvious choice. Takes ages to get in, and it's very busy. Don't expect any good photo's, but you need to see it to believe its size.
The Forum - only a short walk away. Very nice, once of my favourite locations, as it's usually quiet and a lot of the ruins are still overgrown. If I remember correctly, wander across the forum, and then up the hill on the other side (a LOT of steps) and there are two museums at the top. Really nice area, usually clean since people can't be bothered to walk all the way up. Nice shots looking down from there.
Trevi Fountains (of course). Make sure you visit at night. They look boring in teh day. Flip a coin over your shoulder into the water. It's true that you'll return to Rome!
Sistine Chapel - Vatican City (skipped this one, since I seen it all before).
St Paul's Square. Gotta see it, but only to chill out.
Church of St Peter. Skipped this since the queue took about 2 hours!!! The dome is meant to be magnificent.
Castle St Angelo. Gotta see it, very nice to walk through and see the city from high up.
Trastevere district. Very nice area, good to photograph.
Via Del Corso // Spanish Steps. Nice, shopping region.
hope that gives you something research!!
