Adorama came through in a big way! Canon 50/1.2!

What's fun is to put a Canon 50/1.2 on a slightly older Canon bottom loader. It really drills home the amount of light gathering power and glass a lens like this wields. It's not a bad shooting combo too if you don't mind a bit of finder blockage.

I cleaned mine out in 30 minutes following Brian's guidelines. But good to know he was around, in case of anything unexpected. I use the older chrome Canon slimline filters on mine, with the original Canon hood.

Here's my wide-open shot with the 50/1.2 with strong backlight.

And some in subdued light.

All wide-open.

Keep an eye on the element just behind the aperture blades. That surface on Canon RF lenses tends to haze-over from lubricants out-gassing. I've taken mine apart to keep it clean.

If you are experiencing a strong tendency for flare on this lens, check the internal elements for haze.
You are right. I had one with this problem that could not be entirely cleaned up. This needs to be nipped-in-the-bud if it is happening.

Thanks guys for all the comments, if anyone sees an OEM hood for this lens for sale somewhere (and don't buy if yourself 😉 ) let me know. I am posting to the wanted classifieds here but don't get a lot of response from those.

ferider told a while ago the clamp-on hood made for the Zuiko 55/1.2 fits the lens. So keep your eyes open for one of those.

I have a well-used original Canon hood, but I'm not prepared to sell it just yet. 😱

Good luck with the hunt for a hood Colin! I noticed that there is one here ... http://www.kevincameras.com/? ... $175.00 to $195.00 though.

He has the hard to get stuff this guy but he sure ain't cheap! 😱

From memory when I got my lens with hood, caps and two cases plus step up ring I paid around $400.00 ... I think I was lucky! 🙂

All this Canon 1.2 talk made me put mine on my M3 today and actually take a few pics with it ... first time in quite a while. I scanned the negs tonight and had forgotten how beautfuly this lens renders OOF areas at 1.2 🙂

Good catch on the lens, Colin. Adorama is cool that way, sometimes they have great prices, I guess from consignments. Bought my 75 Summilux and 50 Elmar-M that way - way cheaper than at KEH or on ebay.

Two notes on the lens:

At f5.6 and up, it will vignette with a normal filter and filters can touch the front element. The filters to get are thin Hoya HMC-Pro filters, like this one: 200251736502 @ ebay.

The original hood is too pricey, normally. The Zuiko 55/1.2 hood works well, like this:

Kevin usually carries those.

Best,

Roland.

So a normal filter will vignette? I dont know how it could with the lens hood not and it being so close to the lens? I will try a few shots with the one I have, it if vignettes I guess I will be looking for a slim one. I like using a yellow filer mostly, just to boost the contrast a bit, as well as protect the front element. Thanks for the info, I will look up the Zuiko hood and see if I can find one.

Well I found a Zuiko hood in the UK for $25 but am waiting for them to reply to my message, I cant get it shipped yet as I am moving next week. If some nice RFF member in the UK wants to buy it for me and hold it and I will send them money via paypal...

When you get to Alaska, will you take some pictures of Russia and post them here?

Message from Helen at Adorama Camera

The lens was listed as EX condition in the used section on the Adorama website; took a chance and am glad I paid the $400 for the lens. .........This one is almost perfect, only the slightest bit of use marks on the knurled focus ring, otherwise it is beautiful!

Delighted to hear that it all worked out well in the end!

If you ever have any queries or concerns regarding an order from Adorama Camera - or AdoramaPix - you are always welcome to contact me directly.

I use an inexpensive screw-in metal hood from Heavystar--the wide one is shallow enough not to vignette and does a decent job preventing flare and protecting the lens.

There are a bunch of different hoods from Hoya, Konica, Mamiya, Olympus, Minolta, Petri, et al. that will work fine with the Canon 50/1.2 -- just search the auctions for 57mm (clamp-on) or 55mm (screw-in) hoods.

Thanks for the size dimensions, I will check out the 57mm clamp on hoods, so I can use a filter too without having to screw it in. I used a 55mm heavystar wide angle metal hood when I owned one of these lenses before but wanted a clamp on one this time. I may just end up with the Zuiko hood, as it is a clamp on and looks nice, just wish the OEM hood wasn't so expensive, it looks super cool and would free up that bottom right portion of my VF.

Thanks Helen, I will check with you if I have any problems but Adorama has always been great to me, I have bought from your main competition some too, but find both big NYC stores to be equally the best I have ever dealt with.

Normal filters and screw-in hoods do vignette - at least on my two samples they did. There is a reason that original filters were slim and hoods push-on. Of course you have to shoot on full frame, at small apertures and largest FOV (infinity focus) to notice.

On the other hand the lens is quite flare resistant - surprisingly so, to me.

Although one might be able to see Russia with a really, really long lens from Alaska, I don't plan on going that far north 😉

I bought a house just outside of Anchorage, which is pretty far south from where the land bridge once existed between Siberia and Alaska. It gets -30 Fahrenheit for about 20-30 days a year where I will be living, quite cold enough for me without going any farther north!

Actually, it is only a couple of miles, so no need for a really long lens. But it sure is a long way from Anchorage.
