Hey everyone,
I need a little help on this one, and I figured this might be the best place to ask. 🙂 During my last trip to Lisbon with my girlfriend I accidentally shot one roll of APX 100 at ASA 400. All my films are developed in Rodinal. When exposed at ASA 100, I use a 1:50 dilution for 17min for APX 100. I usually scan the negatives afterwards and have been satisfied with what I got using this method so far.

I have never push-developed film before, and therefore did a bit of research already. Unfortunately, I did not manage to find a lot of information on how to push APX 100 to ASA 400 with Rodinal. Since I thought this was a popular combination, I had hoped there would be more people on the internet making stupid mistakes like I did.. 😱

Did somebody do this before? I'm aware of the fact that Rodinal might not be the best developer for pushing films, nontheless I'd really like to stick to it, since I don't want to buy different chemistry just for one roll.

If you have any tips, advice or even sample photos on how to do this, please share them. Thank you!

Niels

Dear Niels,

Basically, you have a choice. Bite the bullet and buy a speed-increasing developer such as Microphen or DD-X, and overdevelop slightly, which will give somewhat more contrast, or stick with Rodinal and overdevelop a lot, which will give you much more contrast. Personally I'd go for the former.

If the pictures are important, I'd even shoot another roll at 400 (any old pics, around home) and see what sort of results you get with pushing before you try the Lisbon roll.

Cheers,

R.

I shot APX 100 at EI 250 and developd in Rodinal 1+50 for 25 minutes, but it came out without any shadow detail, which is what I wanted. However for normal contrast probably a better approach would be a speed enhancing developer like Acufine or DD-X 1+4.

I had to push agfa APX100 to 400 once because I forgot to bring faster film.
I used Rodinal 1+50 as suggested by the MDC (29 min at 20°C)
The shots were lacking shadow detail and also got a much grainier look. But not too bad and better than no pics at all.

Thanks everybody for your kind advice and sample pictures!
I think I will buy another 2 or 3 rolls of APX 100 as Roger suggested, expose them at ASA 400 and then play around a bit to see if I like the results before developing that last roll from Lisbon.

I will definitely try developing with Rodinal 1+50 for 29mins, as the pictures look quite decent, in my opinion. I might also try out stand developing with Rodinal 1+100, as I've never done that before either and have been curios about this for some time now.
Then, if I don't get results I like with these methods, I will go and buy Acufine or something similar.

Most likely it will take some time, but when I have something to show, I will let you know and post some pictures of this little 'experiment'. 🙂

Thanks again!

You could also try diafine .. It gives you ISO 200 with APX100 but 400 is within the latitude I'd guess.
