sounds like it, though then you need an Leica M mount camera to go with it and they cost a few bob. or you could of sold it for a heap
a rarish lens by the sounds of it, according to the leica forum it was just that one 90 lens that came in the 3 element lens and then only in its final years of production.
I'm not even going to embarrass myself by telling how little I sold it for. My thinking at the time was probably something like "Well, it's a triplet. It gets points for being a Leica, but it probably isn't worth much." That probably explains why it got snatched up so fast.
BTW, Chippy, I like Schlitz, Corona and Fosters.

Chippy, good story, I remember doing the quick clean up as my parents drove up. That is sweat time.
avray. Cool shots, I finished a roll of C-41 shot though my Apotar. I'll post tomorrow or Wednesday. This was a fun thread. I still like the idea of a TV museum. We've got to have one in CA someplace.

I'll send ya a Crown Larger to try, made by the same company that makes Fosters but is their premium beer. Fosters we dont see commonly see in the "bottle O" (as we call the shops that sell booze) as much nowadays (in Sth Oz anyway). mostly its for the expot market it appears, and over priced acoridingly!. 25 odd years ago the people in each Aussie state would pretty much stick to drinking what beer was produced in thier own state. Fosters is a Victorian beer but i spent a lot of time in Vic and aquired a taste for it as it used to be the main one drank domestically in Vic, so when i came back to Sth Oz i would drink the Fosters, but around that time Paul Hogan (crocodile dundee, we call him Hoges) started doing adverts overseas for the fosters brand and it took off as an export beer, the same company makes a few other beers that are much the same as fosters so they are the ones we drink domestically now.
still for the sake of the argument i would still say the Elmar is a 4 element Tessar type lens, thats what it was designed as and has sold probably 100's of thousands as such, it was only that one 90/f4 made as a 3 element and then only in its final years and only around 1675 or so of them made. i suppose Leitz didnt know what to call it (not having any other 3 element lenses) and it appears they may have been trying to save a dollar?! and changed the standard 90 elmar to the 3 element. who knows why they did it but they aparently didnt advertise the change in the lens much.

Chippy, that is exactly what I would have said. The lab that I use for C-41 120 was closed today and will be closed for a week (family emergency). I hope that doesn't mean they are closing (period). So it will be a little longer for my 120 Apotar photos from Danville and Camel, CA on this tread; some old 50s houses and lots of Mejicanos on that roll.

if they did close you could always develope your own...b&w is just so easy i dont give it a second thought, for me i think its easier than having to get in the car and drive to the photo lab. by the time i did that i would have it processed, some folks seem to like the C41 for easier scanning though

Sorry Chippy, I do my own B&W 120, I misled you. This is C-41 Color 120. It is getting harder and harder in CA to find a lab to do it. This place was great, I hope they are still open. They are just 8 miles away. I'll have to wait for next Monday to find out the deal.

Funny story Chippy. I think we have all had our misdeeds in our youth that required some creative thinking. And probably didn't sound as convincing to our parents as we thought.
Interesting about the beer. The problem I always found was that something seems to happen when beer gets imported to the US. I don't know if it is just age, or what. I once developed a taste for a couple of Mexican beers, but could never find the same tastes in the US. Never as much what I would call "body" to the taste.
Always seemed to lack that and seem sort of watery. Even their Tecate, which is a Mexican beer especially brewed to be drank with lime juice and salt. For a long time it was the only Mexican beer in a can. Maybe still is, I don't know. I seldom drink these days. I now see advertisements for a Budweiser with lime flavor. Whewoosh.

Good luck with your store there. The closest one to me for 120 is about 25 miles away. I can mail them the film, but have to pick it up. At least they do good work, developing on site. I once tried our local Ritz. It took weeks. Never again.

very gracious of you but no need to apologise, just an asumption on my part because the examples posted in this thread have been b/w and thats more commonly used by us blokes, also standard b/w i think is used more often than C41.
still though, if push comes to shove and they shut down, doing you own colour or E6 film is not difficult--i dont like printing (darkroom) my own colour much at all, but developing the negs or tranparancies doesnt bother me at all. a slight more hassle to keep the temp higher and constant but once you have a system i find it easy.

So Paul Hogan is responsible for Fosters disappearing from Australia huh? Well, let's just call that one a draw, since it appears we were both right. We'll just have to get our own beer. I don't think you can legally mail beer anyway. BTW, I used to collect jungle combat knives. They tend to be daggers and bowies about two feet long and up. Ever seen the movie "Predator?" Those were jungle combat knives. "No, that's not a knife, Mr. Hogan. This is a knife."
Funny story about the TV. I think we've all got a few like that, so thank god I don't have kids.
"Where's your sister?"
"We buried her in the back yard."
"What was in that jar I found in the middle of my bed?"
"What jar?"
"The one with all the holes in the lid, and why isn't the lid still on the jar?"
Creative ways of using florescent paint...
... and so on...

Isolette with Solinar
Isolette with Solinar
I was lucky and got a Super Isolette in an antique store for $Au45. I didn't know what I had at the time until I developed some images and read about it on the net. nice. However, the whole medium format folder thing has been an utter revelation this year. They are very easy to use, carry and produce whopping negatives that are a pleasure to scan. Really makes it hard for me to justify 35mm where I get very crappy scan results (Epson 4990 flatbed - maybe need a Coolscan or something). And don't you just love 6x6 square format! I got an Isolette 1 too for $5 with stuck focus ring and no wind on dial. That one could soon become a pinhole cyclops unfolding its way across the landscape on good cloud afternoons.

Either we're getting older or their export beer is getting worse. I remember a time when Carta Blanca used to be very good. I bought a six-pack a couple of years ago though, and it was unbelievably awful. I think Sol, Corona, Tecate and, in some circumstances, Dos Equis Lager and Negro Modelo are still good Mexican beers though.

Lime juice is one thing, but last time I was at the store, I saw cans of Budwiser with "Clamato" (clam juice and tomato juice). I don't even want to talk about it.

I just received my negatives, a week delay, from my refurbished Apotar lens Ansco Speedex II. I was under the influence of wine on some of the shots so the scale focus was a problem. But I was fine on most of the others. With the magnifier it looks like I need to practice distances. I will post tomorrow.

I don't drink much any more, so I can't comment on the other Mexican beers. I do keep Tecate around, as well as Korean Makoli. But Clamato? Sounds like sewage or bilge water gone stagnate. What is with Bud?

Looking forward to them. I just saw an Ansco Speed*** something in a camera store I frequent. The usual bad bellows and difficult to open the lens door. Sounds like a project for FallisPhoto.

Well-known
charjohncsrter, we are anxious to your pics. I can say with confidence that it is worth getting an Isolette sorted out. Even if one has to replace bellows and get the whole thing CLAed and add a hood and rangefinder if applicable, the end product is one capable of 30x30 inch enlargements easily. I must say, having played with folders for some 20 years, I was quite surprised by the performance of the Apotar. I couldn't say the same for the Novar or the Vaskar. May be the secret is that a good 85mm lens is easier to make than a 75mm or 80mm lens!
oftheherd, if you can pick up a speedex cheap enough and provided that its lens is in good condition (that is, no scratches moulds etc.), do get it.

Sounds like a project for FallisPhoto. One of the clerks expressed an interest in doing that and didn't seem overly anxious to find a price. Actually, I wasn't overly anxious to get it either. I don't have any small RF 120s, but I don't know that I want one. Especially if I have to spend a lot of time on it just to get it to work.
Yes, you would have to spend some time on it, but (if the metal is good -- no deep scratches or numbers/names carved into it) it isn't that difficult to restore and it is very definitely worth the trouble. The Speedex Special R is usually inexpensive and is a very good solid performer.

Sounds to me like one of those ghastly home hangover cures. I'd rather not think about it, let alone drink it.
If I am just going to drink a Mexican beer, I prefer Corona to Tecate and Negro Modelo to Corona. Negro Modelo can be difficult to find though. Convenience stores won't have it. Tecate is kind of weak flavored, but it's good with spicy food. It's just a decent basic beer. Schlitz was the first beer I ever drank, so to me that is what beer is "supposed" to taste like. I come back to that from time to time. Fosters is good too.
