Airport CT scanners

Yes...I flew out of both Munich & Frankfurt last fall and had very friendly interactions at security and had no problems getting my film hand-inspected.
Thanks very much for that, 38Deardoff. That's give me a bit of heart. I am so uninspired by my digital camera and was really wanting to take a film camera. I might go one of your favourite routes and take a CL.

Have a great trip.
IMO with a wide angle, 400 iso film and zone focused the CL quickly becomes a pretty sweet highgrade point & shoot.

Two question for my Canadian friends. I'll be returning to the Motherland later this summer, hoping to fly with film. We'll be taking one domestic flight from Vancouver (YVR) to Calgary (YYC). Have the YVR and YYC airports installed the film zapping CT scanners, and is CATSA amenable to requests to hand check film?

Vancouver has CT scanners in at least some areas. Hand checking without problems. I haven't flown domestically out of Calgary, but in their international departures it's still X-ray machines & they will hand check film on request.

Frankfurt, Achtung

Just returned from a month-
long stay in Korea. Bought my film on location to minimize scanner risk . HP5. Shot 20 rolls. On return trip passed through Frankfurt airport . They had what looked like new generation scanners . Argued with security guy who wouldn’t hand-check my film and barked at me that it was safe under 1600. Finally gave up because of fatigue , complacency after a 13 hour flight . Developed three rolls yesterday and again three rolls today: heavy fogging.

That’s bad. I always check this website (although some info is outdated):

I don’t need this level of anxiety when traveling. And I don’t care what other people say regarding certain European and American airports willing to hand check film because you’d never know if you will get that one power hungry asshole that day.
Yup. I'm flying out in a couple of weeks, departing from LAX. Other points of departure on this trip will be Haneda and New Chitose. All 3 airports have CT scanners. Not worried about the Japanese airports--based on experience, they have always graciously offered to hand check film. LAX can be hit or miss, depending on what kind of day a TSA agent is having.

I have been to Japan usually to Tokyo some 25 time mostly for work these 20 years and in the old days packed my carry on with Yodobashi bought film. Only once was I denied a hand check. That was a decade before CRT scanners so I didn’t complain.

Well, that's bad. Oh grief. And not so good to hear when I am transiting Frankfurt this autumn, though controls would be on the way back.

So far I've either not really encountered CT scanners directly, or the couple times I have, handchecks were allowed.
Actually lowered the anciety levels and planned to travel more with film, as it's just a minor inconvenience only.

I'll bring the manufacturer letters and releases in case...

If anyone is interested in classic aviation, one of the largest fleets of 747s, Lufthansa, are based in Frankfurt. I'd otherwise skipped that routing.

Edit:
Might feel like a moot point, but do present some complaint to the airport authorities.

Likely someone was having a bad day. My air travel experience in Canada, USA, France & Germany in the last 3 years is of greater awareness and flexibility on the part of security staff re film.

I don't know we're they got this from - Poznan airport has CT scanners now and they asked me if my films are above or below 1600. I became suspicious and told them above 1600 (although it was hp5+) and they hand-checked.

It is very likely. My personal experience (mostly Nordics and Baltics) - exclusively positive. In all airports with CT machines I had no issues to have my film handchecked.

I flew to Germany, Düsseldorf Airport, via Dubai this August. In Dubai Airport everybody transiting will go to an arrival security check but no CT scanners in Terminals 1 and 3. In Düsseldorf, they have partially installed CT-scanners and I was lucky on my return flight going through the fast lane, which had conventional scanners. I had a roll of exposed HP5 and it was OK. However ... there is a sign to remove all electronic devices from your check-in luggage, which I did (Notebook, Nikon Z7 II and spare battery). I left my Leica M-A in the bag, which caused some trouble, the camera and bag were wiped and I was lectured that "all electronic devices" (meaning the Leica) need to be removed from the bag. The staff didn't understand what a film camera is.

There was a recent news article about a whole generation of people growing up without the ability to handwrite in a legible manner, and lacking in communication skills beyond brief bursts of abbreviated words, a la messaging. I'm guessing the people manning the scanners were from this generation. It's a little odd, though, as one might think that the sheer volume of people passing through Dusseldorf would have included others with film cameras lately.

They said the same thing about my Olympus Trip 35, but this was during the take off! “No electronic devices”. Seriously?

That was a smart move. If they look at the film canister that says ISO 400 you can always say you intend push to 1600. It worked out once for me.
