Al Kaplan has passed away :(

So sorry to hear this, I was hoping that he'd be back here soon.

RIP, Al, and condolences to his family.

This is very sad news. Al was a heluva nice guy, great sense of humor, and very generous in sharing his experience w/ rf and film photography. He'll be missed. My condolences to his family.

Miss you!

Miss you!

I only know Al from my short presence on this board, which is less than a year. But I already felt I had gotten to know him and miss him now that he has departed. My condolences go to his loved ones.

It takes someone extraordinary to make such an impact on so many people only by being himself. Even on an online forum.

Rest in peace, Mr. Kaplan.

See you on the other side Al. Thank you for all your help and advice. I/we will miss you.

My condolences to Al's family.

Im sitting here numb. Al was so generous and helpful. We emailed several times and he always gave great advice.... along with a joke or two of course. Youre sorely missed Al!

Terrible, terrible news. He was such a kind and generous man.

My condolences to his friends and family.

In correspondence with him last December, I told him him that although I only knew him on the internet, I had greatly enjoyed posts here and on other forums. I think his reply goes to show how much sharing meant to him:

"Sometime about 1966 I attended a lecture by the cultural anthropologist Margaret Meade. She talked about changes in the American family. Smaller families with less kids from one generation to the next, people moving away from their families to faraway places, like my mom moving from Massachusettes to Florida. She talked about the fact that kids traditionally learn skills not just from their parents but also from aunts and uncles as well. Uncle Bob might be a skilled woodworker or Aunt Emma makes the world's best chocolate chip cookies, but that world was fast disapearing. She said that we should strive to be aunts and uncles to our friends' and neighbors' children, passing on our skills and knowledge to them. That's why I write so much on the forum." --- Al Kaplan

Sad news indeed. You could count on Al to have something interesting and witty to say, without ever winding anyone up. He will be sadly missed. Condolences to his family. RIP.

How sad. Al was a great character, and proponent/practitioner of photography. We appreciated him for his photographic skills and wit, but his family loved him for many other reasons, no doubt. May we all find peace.

Very sorry to hear this sad news. Condolences to the family. As many have said before me he was one of kind
