Sad news. As many have said already, I only knew Al from his posts on this forum, but always on the look for his posts whenever I go online. Condolence to his immediate family as well as his extended family everywhere.

My personal thoughts and prayers to Jonathan and Elena. You father will be greatly missed both here and at Photo.net for his wisdom and rare humor.

Al had many friends he never got a chance to meet and mentored many photographers whose photos he never saw. I count myself in both categories. Tonight, when it's dark, I'll look up at the stars and drink a toast to a good man.

My sincere condolences for the family and friends of Al. There were so many people that were estimating him... Strength for these bitter moments, Jonathan and Elena.

This is absolutely dreadful news. You know, Al seemed invincible, didn't he?
What a bummer. Rest in peace, Al.

I am totally numb at this news. So many wonderful stories, so much skill and knowledge lost forever.
I know Al is shooting in a perfect light and place now and I hope for their sakes they have good coffee and smokes!

A friend of the family contacted me after I posted a note of condolence on Al's blog. This friend has been maintaining the blog during Al's illness and noted that Al's kids are aware of the outpouring of warm sentiments being expressed on by his friends on RFF (including lots folks like me who knew him only from his musings on the web). If you post a note on his blog about his trove of images, I'm sure one of them will respond when the time is right. From what I know of Al, his collection of negatives, contact sheets, prints, etc. is certainly fit for some curatorial care. Al was a walking, talking museum and it must be a rather incredible legacy he leaves behind. A real monument to him, not to mention the evidence of a life well-lived and documentation of times and place that he knew.
I wonder what will happen to his collection of photos, contact sheets and negs. I hope the family knows how special it is.

what a man he was.
he leaves behind an uncountable number of friends and a wonderful body of work. here's to Al Kaplan. we won't see another like him.
raise a cup of starbucks brew and try to live a little bit the way Al did.
I only knew Al from the web, but it was clear that his work and his love were one in the same. what a life it was.
Well-stated... ditto. This is very sad news. Great guy and he will be missed. Can't believe he's gone. Condolences to his loved ones.
