Alternative to Plus-X

I've finally used up my last rolls of Plus-X and I am looking for an alternative.

Tri-X is my main film, I use it for 400-3200iso. I use to use Plus-X for 125-400, I loved it's look when pushed in Acufine and Diafine.

Will FP4+ behave similarly?

Any other suggestions for a film of a similar speed, with classic grain, that will work well at box speed and hold up to a 1 stop push?

Fujifilm 71112 (FG80D) filmstock. It is available only in Asia. Rated at ASA80, it pushes well and has a wonderful look. You can see examples on Flickr.

Otherwise, have you tried Double X, Eastman 5222?

Is everyone all out of Plus-X? Hmm, might just be time to freeze my 10 pack and sell it as a vintage collectable film a few years down the track 😛

Most people I know who used to use Plus-X have either switched to FP4 (Probably as close as you'll get to plus-x) or Acros (The smoothness of the tones).

Isn't the Arista 100 premium stuff a relabelled Plux-X? It's a short term solution but it is a solution

It is a long time since I used Plus-X but I think Agfa 100 APX is probably closest in character. But I prefer FP4 over both anyway.

From what I've seen with my first roll, Kentmere 100 looks pretty close to something between Plus-X and AGFA APX 100. I've only done one roll in Xtol so far, but its a nice classic grain film, and looks quite speedy in Xtol. I posted a shot at four-silver-atoms.com with my times, which seems a bit over. I'm waiting for the weather to clear to try a roll in Rodinal.

as far as i know, plus-x is one of the more pushable iso 100 film around.

Shanghai GP3 has been talked about having very similar characteristics. Its major downside, though, is that it curls very strongly, so is difficult to scan. Available in 120 format only though.

I had a few rolls of that and Lucky, they both drove me up the wall with their mad curling. But they do have a quite nice tonality, but I just can't take the stress of them curling too much. I have enjoyed Rollei RPX100 and Foma 100 both in RO9 for 120 and Pollypan in 35mm is a mega bargain. Though it has to be said Lucky in 35mm does come in reload able cassettes, so its not all bad.

It's available through distributors in Taiwan.
I just checked Ruten (Taiwan's ebay) and didn't see it there.

Fuji Acros 100 is my favorite B&W film. I use the Zone System and rate it at ISO 6 which gives me f4 @ 125 on a bright sunny day, with plenty of shadow detail and luscious tones. You can download the details on my web site.

Fuji Neopan SS looks a lot like PX imho. Or just lose a stop and try Pan F, which looks much like PX too.

I'll miss Plus X. My favorite film. Nice unobtrusive grain and wonderful tonality.

25% of my local camera stores still have good stock of 135 Plus-X. Who knows how long that will last, though.

It is different, but for "slower" B&W film I am going to use Foma 200. Like I said, it is different from Plus-X, but I do find it pretty pleasing too.

This is nice choice, I like Foma 100 and 200. There is however even bigger shortage of Foma 200 than Plus-X at the moment. Only Freestyle has it and is marked "low stock".

I did see that some stores still have it, I'm just looking to transition now.

Double-X seems promising. I really dislike winding cartridges, does anyone sell this pre-wound?

I've tried Fuji Acros 100, in fact I have probably 20 rolls of it in my fridge after buying it up on clearance for $0.25 a roll when a local store quit carrying film. It's nice and fine grained, but it seems to lack the character I'm looking for.

FP4 is a very tolerant film. I use it pushed to 500 when working under flat lighting and I need to pick up the contrast. Acufine for 8 minutes works for me.
