Well-known
Edition One on Berkeley looks top notch, but the very high prices reflect that.
How about printing in China? I went to the bookstore of the National Gallery in DC and checked about the Impressum of around a hundred photo books. Not surprisingly, the most famous pubishers print in-house. But I saw — much to my surprise — that about half of all photo books were “Printed in China”, even by very reputed publishing houses in the US and Europe, or US and European university presses. Most of the books published by Aperture Foundation are printed in China by Artron, others by Asia Pacific Offset, 1010 Printing International, etc.
Is printing in China a viable option [edit:] for small volume self-published print runs, given their much lower price point?
Does anyone have experience with Print Ninja? They look interesting.
