Alternatives to flickr?

Before now, I have noticed people hosted versions "on black background" of their images somewhere alse and added link "view on black" under picture. Now it's home-brewed feature.

The embedded view-on-black feature is great. You can look at the photos in any photostream/group and use the keys to navigate to the next photo. I don't need the external viewers anymore.

I'm in agreement with all of these, but they have made it more difficult to generate bbcode markup for posting photos and links in phpbb forums like the RFF.

Right click on your image, select "largest size," then right click on that image, select "properties," highlight and copy the full URL, then paste into whatever forum you need.

I love every single thing about the new Flickr layout. It took a couple of days to get used to, but what a terrific update overall.

Alternatives? I also use Zenfolio, but differently, as it's not nearly as "social" as Flickr.

I know how to do that, but before the update I had a javascript bookmarklet that would create bbcode markup, with both

i think one big question is "where do you go to get your photos seen by the people you want seeing them"? flickr would seem to have the virtue of sheer size working in its favor.

If you're anti-flickr because of a perceived layout problem, you are sort of missing the point. A gallery it is not. Social media it is.

The one that really pi$$es me of is photo bucket. The wowsers have deleted some of my nudes occasionally because they found them unsuitable.

But ... the main page constantly brings up ads for on line encounters with 'naughty girls' ... please click here!

WTF! :D

I never liked flickr, this version is just more of the same. Currently I use Picassa Web from google (1 gb storage free) and when/if I can afford something I'll be looking closely at Smugmug.

I like the new layout notably better than the old, but I also wish there were a cleaner way to get proper BBCode for an image. I'm sure the browser extension guys will be all over that as they were with the old version.

As a software guy, I totally sympathize with not going to inordinate effort to support older or non-mainstream browsers. It's generally better to make things work as well as possible for the vast majority than to make special tweaks or compromises for the minority.

I'm a software guy too, and backwards compatibility is f--n irritating to deal with. But with a small client base, you can tell them to upgrade, maybe even visit them and upgrade for them!

Flick has ~30 million members. The new interface isn't 100% compatible with IE6. IE6 is still being used by 7% of surfers. Simple math: overnight, the flickr UI became worse for 2 million people. That's enough to start a movement, or maybe a new company!

With a massive user base, a company should make an effort to be 100% compatible with all browsers. Take gmail for example... you can use it with anything. (Google gets it).

Well I don't have an issues with browser compatibility and such, but can anybody tell me why after the switch some of my pictures are now only available in medium size, while others are still available in the size I've uploaded them in before the switch?

Pretty irritating.

They probably stopped supporting IE6 for the same reason my company did. Yes IE6 is still being used by 7% of surfers... but if you look at the demographics that that share of surfers make up you'll find it's mostly:

A) non-techsavy people that haven't bought a new computer in 10 years and/or wouldn't know how to update their browsers even if they new they should

B) government and big business users that use IE6 for compatibility reasons with custom legacy software

Almost anyone with basic computer knowledge is at the very least using an up to date version of IE and are most likely using Firefox, Safari or Chrome. I'm sure they'll probably get around to fixing the issues with the minority browsers eventually but their catering to their biggest user base and you can't blame them for that. They HAVE to move forward with newer technology or they'll get left behind. And besides... IE6 came out in 2001, which is eons ago in tech time, and has been widely derided as the worst browser of all time for both usability and security... even Microsoft doesn't recommend you use it. Can you really blame them for not supporting it?

I agree.

Flickr's new look is different, but I'll get used to it.. the single greatest thing they did was allow me to add a pic to groups by checking them off all at the same time instead of having to add them one at a time with an annoying confirmation box after each one.

Big time agreement.

This is true to a point. At flickr you have fewer options for setting up the way you want your photos to be viewed; for instance, at Smugmug, you can set up your galleries with a specific background, whereas at flickr, you can't use any background but the white-default. I'd like it if I could set my photos to be against a black background by default. But flickr is a lot less expensive than Smugmug (~ 2/3 the cost) ...

I never liked flickr, this version is just more of the same. Currently I use Picassa Web from google (1 gb storage free) and when/if I can afford something I'll be looking closely at Smugmug.

I use Picassa but its interface is much more limited than flickr's.

Your simple math is only correct if the 7% of the surfers are also 7% of the members of flickr. I doubt that. I think the users of flickr are more technology aware, especially those who deal more with digital photos. Then I am sure flickr makes a distinction between member and user. A user is perhaps someone who visits at least once a week or has more than 50 photos or has a pro-account or whatever. Now it's interesting how many of those users still use an old browser. Depending on that calculation I would decide how much compatibility I pay for. I wouldn't care about someone who only visits once a year.

Me too. I hope they make further improvement to show my pictures LARGER.

I hope their next update makes my screen bigger too :)

I like the new update. My only comment would be that interspersing favorites and comments makes it a tiny bit more annoying to read a conversation being held in the comments, but that's hardly a big problem.

As for adding tags to multiple pictures from pre-existing tags, I HIGHLY recommend Photomechanic. Which leads to the question - how do most of you tag/keyword your photos for flickr? In the flickr web interface? flickr upload program? Somewhere else?
