Always use a hood with Summar?

Surprising effects, I've never seen this on my shots. But the Summar is a strange thing. The FLQOO is a shade by Leitz for the 35mm Elmar, but it vignettes on the Summar - a 50mm lens!

An option I have used several times in the past for lenses with various diameters - 39mm (Leica), 40mm (Canon), 40.5mm (Various European lenses) and 41mm (Leica Summarit) thread diameter is to buy a stepping ring for each of these to 43mm diameter.

I have then bought lens hoods similar to the one depicted below.

The advantage is that it provides a cheap alternative to original vintage hoods which tend to be expensive and hard to find and also that 43mm is sufficiently large in diameter compared to the diameter of the front elements of all of the above lens types as to preclude vignetting while still providing an effective shade. 43mm was also a fairly common filter diameter back in the day so I have also had the good fortune to be able to buy a couple of original old hoods of this diameter at inexpensive prices in the "bits and pieces" bins in camera stores. On eBay however these tend to command a premium.

Thank you, Peter, for these tips. I don't know why, but on a vintage camera I like not only a vintage lens, but also a vintage hood! Maybe because of the looks.

The Summar used on the Leica IIIa is not the same one as on the M Monochrom. Sold that one to raise funds to buy the M Monochrom, then picked up the most recent one at the camera show. The Sun is behind a tall tree, the light is coming through leaves on the tree. It is odd- I liked the effect in the color shot.

I seldom use a hood when shooting my Summar (although I do have a 3D printed friction fit one) and have never really had an issue with flaring...but I generally avoid shooting toward or at oblique angles to the sun with any glass that is uncoated or single coated.

Using a Monochrome is difficult for me because I want to make gelatin/silver prints of my shots. I'll keep my IIIa and my other Barnacks. But thank you, Brian, to explain the effect. It has to do with the sensor.
