Amazing Industar

First off, I'm sorry I've been pretty busy and haven't been here as often as I'd like to be. I hate it when something distracts me from my passion. Second, I just got the roll of film back where I had taken some photos on Fed 2 with Industar collapsible 50mm, f/3.5 lens. Let me tell you, it is one sharp lens as you can see from some of the images shot on expired Kodak Gold 200, unedited, except white balance correction for the image of a man sitting on a chair looking into the street. There's some spots and scratches from scanning at a local lab, but that's not the fault of lens/camera. I was lucky enough to have bough this lens from a local dealer in a very good condition. This could be a nice portrait lens with its vignetting. However, there's this couple of images where there's this light flare. I don't know if if it's lens flare or not. It's the one in the shot of kids playing framed inside a window, and the vertical low angle shot of street stones where there's a bright light is visible on the bottom of the shot. Anyone know what this could be?

Thanks for your reply. It's interesting you said that because the other shots I posted don't exhibit this problem. What about this image? This was shot with an Industar f/2.8 silver lens, same camera (Fed 2). Again, not all images show similar problems when shot with these lenses.

It could be flare from a filter or internal reflection in the lens. Is there any paint loss internally? Are you using filters?

That is not flare...you have a light leak.

I agree that some of the old FSU lenses are wonderful. I have a number of them including a J12, J8, J3, and a number of Industars.

Good luck with your rig and hopefully you will be able to run down that leak.

I'm inclined to agree with zuikologist. There was a similar situation with another lens on RFF recently, and I noticed with some of my Fed Industar lenses a lack of blacking on the lens element's edges which increased flare. You can see the lens on the left has lost blacking paint and flares more easily.

the wrecked vehicle one looks like flare I got from my industar-22.
Check paint loss at the inside surface of the cylinder of the lens, where your finger can reach. You may brush some non shinning black paint to make it up.

The other two were light leaks to me.

Hard to tell from such small images. And you must have the Jpeg "quality" set near 100, because for the same file size, you could have a larger image size, still virtually free from compression artefacts. Try 2x more pixels each dimension, and jpeg compression 90. This should allow viewers to set apart the Industar-22 from a cheapo lens.

Some FSU lenses have this flare in the middle. And so far I haven't seen it figured out. It is not always present, but pops once in a while.
FED-2 construction is leaks free. It is not Kiev. But I would recommend to check how curtains and light screens are alighted and verify what curtains are holes free.
Light leaks on edges could be from developing.
I've had I-10 which was flaring like crazy. Fixed it with black matte modeling paint.

I guess, we not going to see OP again for while, he'll be busy with figuring it all out.

Thanks for your replies. I checked the collapsible lens it look ok inside. I will check the inside of the lenses once more tomorrow during daylight to make sure there's no shiny areas or paint chipping.

Don't discount a light leak just because it's not on all the images. I shot a roll earlier this year on a £5 car boot sale Kodak Colorsnap. I had light leaks on about 4 photos on a 24 shot roll. I'm guessing it depends on how long a particular piece of film sits next to the leak and how you carry the camera? Strangely, the leaks looked great on those photos, so it's not always a bad thing!

Hi everyone,

This morning I looked on the back of the lenses I mentioned and there were some tiny spots where paint was chipped, or faded. I applied some matte black paint. I'll shoot another roll with these lenses and see how that works out. Could this problem also occur when you shoot a few exposures, take the roll out of the camera (in darkroom), put it into another camera and re-shoot the rest of the roll? I did it with the photos mentioned above which came out of the same roll but 2 different cameras. Also, there was a little over a month period of time when the half-used roll was sitting in the camera, lens attached and lens cap on.

Swapping rolls could be a problem if your darkroom isn't completely dark. It needs to be much better sealed than for B&W enlarging, for instance.

Take the back off the Fed2 with film out of course. Take the lens off & point the camera at a bright surface, TV screens are excellent. Trip the shutter at different speeds & watch the curtain travel. Pay attention at 1/ 60th. Fed 2s especially in my experience & what I've read are prone to show capping at 60th of second. Then shine a flashlight through the curtains to see any pinhole leaks. Good luck. Fed 2s are fine camera's.
