REDUCED PRICE -- 1957 Rangefinder s2 -- and a Question
Hello again, hello,
I have reduced the asking price for the r2 outfit, due to many comments received on it, to bring it closer in line with what a whole outfit might go for. I was able to change the price but not to change it from an auction to a 35mm small format camera sale. I'm still working on how this forum functions. I'm kind of wishing I'd made inquiries of members BEFORE I first posted the item.
Also, do you all think it would be appropriate to post some of my photos in the gallery here, given that they were taken with a modern digital camera? This forum is so active and robust. I can't say that of all of them.

@DansArtRealm, yup, you can post digital pics. There are quite a few digital sectionsx here, such as the Leica m240 and the sony ones.

Thanks! I think I'll post a photo or two. I used to have many on a now-defunct site called Photo-sig. Most of my DeviantArt stuff consists of digital paintings. It's about time I got back to showing my photos. Quite a bit of "scenic New England" stuff.

I think the offer may be low but really , asking 245% could
Be perceived as , a joke .
Or at the least an unrealistic price .

The guy started shutterbug ads said your camera is worth what you think it is to you , or what someone else will give you for it , or what you can get in trade ,
To post on someone's ad 'I'll give you $550 for it'
Usually you contact someone by pm and make an offer
You don't have to bully them in public to get the price down
They either accept your offer or decline it .
Prices on all film collectable cameras are down ,
There is a big difference between the eBay $400 s2 and a good one

All depends on what "a good one" means to you. I suspect we have different ideas on exactly what that means.

The problem with getting top dollar for a Nikon S2 is that just about every collector has one, it is the highest production Nikon rangefinder camera, there may still be more than 50,000 of them out there. As I write this, I can count close three dozen of them on ebay in addition to the 2 nice ones here.
The other issue is, not every collector is willing to pay $1000 or more for a pristine example, some are happy with $500 examples that can shoot pictures, collectors are are a dime a dozen, there are all kinds of them out there. Nowadays if one is patient they can have a real nice one for under a grand, who cares if it's missing the box?
Unlike 10-15 years ago, when there were many buyers and few cameras, today there are many cameras and few buyers. Look at the price of Leica digital rangefinder cameras and you know why film cameras are dropping in value...
I can officially proclaim the Rangefinder Renaissance is over.

What you posted was an ad for an S2.
Not interested.
I started with an S3 and after getting a couple of them also got an SP.
To me, going to an S2 would be a step backwards.

What do you consider to be a "reasonable price", Robert?
A cursory search of Yahoo Japan auctions dug up this repaint (link) for just over 200,000 Japanese YEN, but I have no idea if that price qualifies as reasonable for you.

Unless my math is off, that works out to about $2,400.00 Canadian, which is indeed within my realm of reasonable.
I don't speak or read Japanese so naturally, I don't visit Yahoo Japan, but limit myself to English-speaking sites.

I don't speak or read Japanese either, but I've gotten many good deals from Yahoo Japan Auctions. My current S2 is an amazing, almost-new chrome dial version that I got about a year ago for less than $200 (body only). However, it really only makes sense financially if the country in which you live isn't strict with collecting customs duties.
There's a multitude of online translation tools and proxy bidding services these days. Perhaps consider casting the net a bit wider?
Good point. No experience personally, but I suspect there's some proxy bidding services that would be prepared to be flexible on the customs declaration. Especially since most of their business comes from China, and China has recently gotten a lot stricter about taxing imported items.
