An Open Letter......

I've read this entire thread now. Jorge noted a basic rule.. no profanity. It's Jorge's site , I can handle this. A topic can get off course a little with humour or the topic leading to another aspect of photography or literature related to photography, even writing instruments. I can handle this.

Jorge has said take off topic stuff "outside" ie the "And now for something completely different" just no profanity. This is not hard.

Seems to me there is more non RF non photographic exercise at this site than photography or discussion directly about photography. It would be nice if a lot of the members in this thread were totally committed to a gallery here. They are not. RFF is all about that topic, images. Stop typing, buy some film, load your camera, take some shots, upload them. Try and start threads about the essence of this site, photography. If you want to debate “the US Rocks” take it to "And now for something completely different".

Please?

🙂 🙂 Frank, I always love your posts here. You are always the voice of calm and reason when the s**t hits the fan.

Ditto what Rick said.

Maybe it's time for everyone to either sit and fondle their rangefinder or do something radical like go take some pictures.

The Usa Rocks!!!!! Canada Sucks!!!!
OK ... time for a rousing chorus of Blame Canada and then we can forget this mess.
Words for those who don't have them committed to memory:

Times have changed
Our kids are getting worse
They won't obey their parents
They just want to fart and curse!
Should we blame the government?
Or blame society?
Or should we blame the images on TV?
No, blame Canada
Blame Canada
With all their beady little eyes
And flapping heads so full of lies

Blame Canada
Blame Canada

Peter

To be honest I have only scanned this thread because it is getting quite tedious. But I wanted to make two comments. First, I am mostly a lurker because I know so much less than others here and enjoy learning from many of them. My observation is that perhaps with knowledge, skill, and the financial independence required to own some of this fine equipment comes ego. If a member decides to leave or push an opinion to the point of being banned, it's just a case of inflamed ego. And that's too bad. Roger Hicks is a good example. He's forgotten more about photography than I will ever know, but his ego prevented him from sticking around. And the egos of others couldn't stop them from provoking. So please, if you are considering leaving the site due to some offense, just walk away from the thread and come back another day, or in extreme cases just ignore those who provoke you. That way all the other readers like me can still enjoy so much of the experience and knowledge that makes this the best photography forum on the web.

Here's my method. Take photographs, develop film, store negs in inert sleevs in metal storage case. I can see how that is too expensive and complicated.

Until your house burns down and your negs goes with it..

If you had multiple digital copies in various locations (offline, online), you'll be protected that much more.

Ah yes... I must admit my house burns down quite regularly, and I see daily posts from other analogue photographers complaining of the same thing, their houses burn down, get flooded, are nuked etc. all the time!
Of course I have never seen anyone asking how to retrieve lost information on a corrupted memory card, hard drive, CDR or DVDR... nope never! 🙄

If that is a person's choice then good luck to them, it doesn't make them a bad person, but I personally will not trust any of my work to digital storage.

You trust all your money to digital storage. Everyone with a bank account does.

Film is good. Digital is good. Choose whichever is best for the job, or whichever you prefer to use. For me it's film, but why should I care if anyone else prefers digital? Geez!

If you were falsely accused of something would you allow it to go unchallenged? I was falsely accused of anti-US feeling by a moderator. I want that accusation retracted. If it is not it will prove what I have been saying about there being one rule for some and another rule for others on RFF.

Why? you gonna run for office in the future??

andy, you so silly... 😀 😀 😀

Please specify the personal attacks I made against you..

"AndyK 400 film" ?? What else..? lets bring em to the table and we can see how silly your accusations are.

Perhaps you've missed the point.... wait i mean you've indeed missed the point.

The whole point of DVDR, CDR etc is to have redundancy.. it is much easier to generate multiple copies of the same data, storing in different locations. How do you suppose to create multiple copies of the same negative? I'm sure you can't do it without degrading the quality of each generation. You also need to apply appropriate migration plan as your medium becomes obsolete, or you are seeing degredation, but this is easily accomplished in the digital domain. You simply can not say the same thing about film. This is the way of the future, I suggest you jump on the train.

Yes I do, and in the last year there have been at least four occasions when I could not get my money because the bank's computers were 'down'. Thankfully I also have an up to date Bank book.

I've been pushing dollar bills into the slot on the front of my computer. I have another slot that looks like a credit card reader... I should try that. But, PayPal would be convenient, wouldn't it.

Heck, Brian, I have this drawer on my computer and when I push the button out pops a cup holder!

Is that cool or what? 😎

Over 100,000 negatives, including priceless and irreplaceable film footage and still film of the Kennedy Administration and the Port Authority's history of public works in NYC were lost when the towers fell on 9/11.

Numerous financial institutions lost all their operating equipment and staff, all their daily records of financial transactions. No customer's money was lost as a result, all records were restored from offsite backups.

I scan my negatives and keep both the negs and the files.

Bill Mattocks

Was any of your money lost? Were you unable to recoup?

The Kennedy Archives are lost. Show me the passbook that restores them.

Too bad they weren't scanned.

Mine comes with a cigarette lighter as well. With a donut dispenser added, I'd be set.
