Rover,
I think about taking part, but first stupid question:
What does that mean, 300dpi at 7" ?
Unfortunately all I got as jpegs are lab scans about 1100X1600 pixels large, too small for a book print 8X10 IMO ?

It would probably be best to rescan them and get them to a 2100x1500 pixel size.

---

I thought about this issue too. Not everybody has a film scanner. I think that the people without scanners could send their chosen pictures to other RFF members for scanning. Im sure people would be up for this. I just got my Minolta Dual Scan 3 and would be willing to scan some pictures (thought I wouldnt say I have mastered the art of film scanning, I just got the thing). Im sure there are plenty of us here with scanners, so that we could split up the pictures that need to be scanned amongst us.

Here is what you need to do. I will start a list, “first come, first serve” with the considerations noted above based on emails you send to me. Please send a message to me at:

rmeliso <at> gmail <dot> com

You need to include the following information
1) Your full name as you will like it to appear in the book
2) Your RFF name
3) Your email address
4) The country in which you live (this will be in the book)

EMAIL sent,
Bertram

I sent in my e-mail earlier today - when do we learn if we "made the cut"?

Email sent.

That 50 must be full by now.

Thanks for informing me of this thread, Jan! Too bad I couldn't read it until just a few minutes ago. I had a recital of my girl's music school and came home late, after being from 5am. And again now I'm up since 5. I don't get much sleep lately and simply can't be bothered even to turn on the pc at home. At work I just have to. 🙂

Hi Bertram! 300 dots(pixels) per inch, 7 inches... 2100 pixels on the long side. You should try for a larger scan.

My local lab supplies scans of 2000x2992 pixels for 35mm, 2000x2696 for 6x4.5cm, and 2000x2504 for 6x7cm. Odd that as the film gets larger, the scans get smaller, but that's how their gear works... Any of these should be sufficient for the project with even some extra for cropping.

Rover, happy to see you're heading up this.
Good luck and I will be sure to buy a copy.

man, I am always too late for these things.

anyway I sent the email.

Is minox 35 considered a rangefinder? some of my best shots are with this camera.

Second question: The photos must be new ones , not posted already at RFF ?

Thanks !
Bertram

Bertram, Gene or RayPa will be best to explain the pixel part to you. For publishing though the final images must be provided at a resolution of 300 dpi. You may have to ask your lab to provide a higher resolution scan to get this. The final image size should be 7 inches long on the long side. The short side can be any length to keep the proportion of the image.

Your second question is a very good one. No, the images for the book do not need to be new ones. If you have a couple you would like to use, great, that will speed things up. I plan on using two images I shot in April myself.

Too late?

One of the first things we talked about when putting this project together is that we wanted it to be inclusive not exclusive. We are a much bigger community today than we were when the first book was put together so we knew that 25 was not the correct number of participants this time around.

50 isn't either.

So, for everyone who has replied, we are going to make it work. Everyone is in. We will have to shut the door soon, but if you have expressed interest, you are in.

More info will follow.

Checking the time stamp of rover's first message and the timestamp of my "sent" email, i guess i was between the first ones😀
I came right back from some beer swallowing activity last night when i have seen the thread, and was not sure today if i really did send a mail. Huh!

Another two questions, sorry..............

Hi Rover,

thanks for your answer ! Not printing myself with inkjets I wasn't familiar at all with the dpi and print size relations. As far as i understand it now a scan with 2100 pixels on the long side would do it.That is what PS tells me when I enter 7" and 300dpi and the remarks of some friends here in the thread seem to confirm it ?.
No USM at all ? B&W only or colour too ?

Do we get a confirm if we are in the contest or not ? I'd let some of my negs re-scan then first, not knowing if inspiration will come over me in time ! 😀

Thanks again ,

Bertram

No sharpening. Gene and Ray will sharpen the images so that the all will look consistent. Both B&W and color images are fine.

Everyone is in Bertram, so far, so this is a confirmation for everyone who has already sent a message.

Hey Rover, would it be possible for you to maybe post one concise message, preferably in a new (locked?) thread, that summarizes all of the requirements and guidelines for submission?

This thread is now 5 pages long and getting some of the answers is kind of challenging even though everything has probably been discussed.

Thanks. 🙂

dmr, good idea, I will do so shortly. I am time sharing my computer this morning with my son. We will give concise direction soon.

Thanks ! And thanks for the personal effort you guys invest in this project !
I'll let my local photog re-scan some negs next week ! 🙂

Best regards,

Bertram
