another gear related 'which would you do' question...

for the everyday short outings, be they photo related or just going for groceries or walking the dog, i always take a camera.
i have enough small camera bags to keep set up kits at the ready.

to make up a kit i have been going with my 2 black lenses and the black body and my 2 silver lenses with the silver body.
this is silly, i know.

how would you do it?

body with 35 & 90
body with 25 & 50
body with 50 & 90
or...

which combinations would you make?

Silly, maybe... But if you have the time to ponder the question, why not? I vote for 25 and 50. The 25 can cover any necessary wide stuff, while the 50 takes care of most other things.

I bet somewill suggest getting a 75 so you can have a 35 and 75 combo. Oh, yeah. I guess that person will be me! 🙂

if i travel with only one lens it is often the 35.
but since i have a few of these small domke 5xb bags, an extra lens and film is so easy to carry.

Well, sure. Using a 35 and 90 would be a good combo, but sometimes I think 90 might be just a bit too long for most normal spontanious shooting situations. But maybe not.

As I noted above 25 & 50 is still my vote, but I thought the 35/75 was plausible too. Christmas is coming up after all! 😉

and for a large part of the year i dress like the michelen man and a camera wrapped around me might get lost😉

Were it me with those choices, I would likely take all the lenses. 50 on the camera and the others in my pockets or the bag. I walk most of the time and on my day to day wanderings, I generally have one camera and two lenses. Which two changes but is most often a 50 and something else. Although, this past week it has been 21 and 135. Just for a different approach to the scenes I move through daily.

Mine is usually an "all-or-next-to-nothing" approach: either the whole bag goes out on my shoulder, or just one camera and lens which could be any combination (A Hexar body with the 50, the Konica S3, the Ricoh GR1, or, if I'm not feeling the least ambitious, the Konica Lexio 70 or Olympus 510 digital - sometimes referred to here semi-derisively as "the old 5 & 10"). I figure that if I'm bothering to carry more then the lens already attached to the body, it's not that much more of a stretch to carry most of the whole kit n' kaboodle (which comprises two bodies, three lenses). That way, I generally avoid lens changes...there's my other lens, with a body conveniently attached to it already!🙂

Sounds like you need a Tri-Elmar. Three focal lengths and no bag.

Otherwise 25 (or 28) and 50.

I might even go 21mm on camera 35 in the beg or 28mm and thats it 😀

why bothering about this?

well, i can understand that when choosing a gear item for purchase, you might go through these questions excessively. but as for your daily carried stuff, i'd not spend too much time but chose on the fly (the moment you leave the house), especially since each combination is the same way portable.

if you do not know yet what will be your preferred "minimum gear selection" i assume you'll find out soon.

For me, if it were "single camera, single lens" I'd go with camera+50. Otherwise, I'd go with a 35, 50, 75 combo and mount the lens I initially think I'd be most likely to use (which for me would usually be either the 35 or the 75 I don't have yet).

I take lenses in order of the frequency with which I use them, so it's a 50 on the body, then 35, and then the 25 or 90 (the last 2 in equal measure).

35/75 (or 35/90 as you already have them??). 90 is not that long really but gives compression when you need it. Found when last in new york that I really needed a 90 when I was limited to 60mm. I could not isolate elements of rooftops, buildings etc with the 60). Good combo for street or landscapes, however if I was doing landscapes I might be tempted by even 28/90 or 28-75. I tend not to use stds for landscapes so could happily go for short and long with no normal.

As I posted elsewhere the 90 Macro elmar loks like dynamite for a tiny travel lens for extra reach under normal circumstances and moderately close up work.

I reckon a 35-90 or 35-75 combo would lead to frustration only very occassionally, most likely at the wide end (in which case a 24/25 would be a welcome addition)

i have been going with the 25 & 35 and the 50 & 90 combos.

the 25 and the 35 are my most used lenses while the 50 & 90 have been my least used pair.
putting the 50 & 90 together has forced me to use these lenses more as i take them out as a challenge to myself to learn to use them more effectively.
