Any news on the new Plustek 120 scanner?

Some get on fine with Silverfast but I suspect it'll be an abridged version so extra will need to be coughed up for one reason or another.

Really? Even with Silverfast 8?

I've been a victim of the upgrade/update "system" and PC upgrades coupled with lost CD's of the software (in the end bit by bit cost me more than my current scanner). To be honest i didn't try the 8 but thats more because of me getting on really great with Vuescan.

I happen to like Silverfast 8 myself, although I've recently been using Vuescan more. They both have their pro's and con's. Silverfast 8's interface is much improved, Vuescan is pretty clunky. However, I like how easy it is to downsample a scanned image right in Vuescan (since with most scanners you have to scan at a grossly inflated dpi to get maximum image quality.) I feel like I have a bit more control of output with Vuescan at the expense of usability.

Ultimately I'm happy to have Silverfast included.

Another vote for VueScan, although I've already gathered from Marks earlier reply that it will not make a difference :)

At least it will be sold in the EU, thanks for easing my mind on that one, Mark!

Mark,

please think about this: quite a few of us already have a Vuescan license.
This allows us to drive the new Plustek as well without additional costs (it's the licensing model of Vuescan).
So why pay a (hidden) cost for the bundled Silverfast 8 (which many of us don't even like)?

Say the scanner without Silverfast and without the IT8 target (which, again, some of us already have) would cost $100 less. Well for us it's a $100 saving: not bad.

I've used Vuescan on 8 different scanners. I never had to check to see if I had the right version loaded (well, almost), I never had to buy a different version when I upgraded from Vista to Win7 to Win7-64. I have it installed on 2 different computers (desktop and laptop) and I don't have to worry which is connected to which USB scanner. I don't have to keep an outdated OS to support my outdated scanner since the new version of Silverfast doesn't support the old scanner on the new OS. Vuescan just works... with everything.

If you get a kickback from Silverfast then by all means bundle. If not......

We hear ya loud and clear regarding VueScan! But please note that the scanner will ship with SilverFast 8.

Who will force us to pay for a full version every time we upgrade the OS or acquire an other scanner.

Their sales model and support sucks :bang:

SilverFast gargles B*llz !
I'm sure it sucks to read such poor support for that sw.
Maybe they could step it up a notch and provide better long term support.
OS's change and often. Technology is constantly evolving .. SF needs to evolve as well without taxing exhisting users.

Seems like the chiefs have decided. But guys, on occasion, change your drugs ... SF may only be in business still because of this bundeling strategy. I really wonder what actually drives decisions like that (but have some ideas, though ...). Do yourself and us a favor and make sure Vuescan supports this scanner as well from day one and bundle it with whatever you like. I also never used the vendors own RAW converters. That's hidden cost, too.

Cheers
Ivo

I've never seen a scanner being sold without a software to run it and I have yet to see a scanner bundled with Vuescan. Be realistic, people.

Besides it's not clear yet whether the scanner will come with Silverfast 8 Ai or SE. Ai as a standalone version costs $500 while SE costs $50. If it comes bundled with SE it's likely you're not paying that much for the software to be included.

Other Plustek scanners are sold without Silverfast, at a lower price than with it. I do not know what software they have, but obviously they can sell without silverfast for those who want to save money or who just don't like Silverfast.

Sure, they can sell it without Silverfast if they have their own software but they cannot sell it with no software at all. So if they didn't develop a Plustek software and decided to go with Silverfast instead then there's no chance they will sell it unbundled.

this turned into a SF bashing thread quite fast, so back on the topic .. when can I buy this scanner?
:D

Software plays as important role as hardware to deliver a brilliant image. The OpticFilm 120 comes with the world recognized professional film scanning software, SilverFast Ai Studio 8, and it is full functionality. For example, SilverFast iSRD® helps dust and scratch removal and optimizes images. SilverFast Multi-Exposure® increases the dynamic range and reduces noises. Auto IT8 Calibration® helps color calibrating in 2 minutes and ensures correct colors. All in all, SilverFast Ai Studio 8 meets the highest standards, and these SilverFast software features are well-combined and perfectly-integrated with the OpticFilm 120.

Realisticly, no one has suggested that. How about shipping with VS as a standard product, just like the digileicas being sold with a LR license?
