Any news on the new Plustek 120 scanner?

This Plustek 120 scanner should be great competition for the overpriced used Nikon 9000's and Minolta Multi-Pro's.

I'm sure it will be faster, finer and more reliable. Especially since service and parts will be available for a much longer time.

How about replacement lamps? I think they no longer exist for the Minolta. (don't know about the Nikon).

With an LED light source it's a total non-issue for the Plustek.

I don't really understand this sort of comment. Why does it make any difference if you consider the Nikons and Minoltas to be overpriced if you want to buy this new scanner?

I hope the new scanner really is up to the standard of the LS9000 - but it remains to be seen. I'm sure when it finally comes, owners of the Nikon will find it slightly inferior, while owners of the Plustek will see more detail in shadow areas or less grain, and so on, ad infinitum.

I'm just glad that there's gonna be more scanners to choose from in the future. No need to start point-scoring even before the new machine is released.

Now that there is no competitive scanner available to buy new, the prices on these used medium format scanners have gone stratospheric.

With a high-quality, new scanner on the market, who would pay the crazy prices for a used machine with no service or repair parts available?

The coolscans are overpriced because they have no competition. The only game in town worth considering are the epson flatbeds and those fall far short of a dedicated film scanner. People on ebay are willing to pay $3000 on a used coolscan with absolutlty no support frojm Nikon when at a similar (or slightly higher) price point you can get a flextight scanner.

May I please encourage Plustek to support Linux.

At a minimum, that would mean providing "binary blob" drivers that will operate with the Linux version of Vuescan.

Better still to support the sane project.

I for one would be grateful and you will have a sure sale.

But it's not totally unsupported. I just got back my 8000ED last week for a burnt out power supply. Maybe this part is in common with the 9000 so that parts are still available but I consider myself happy that I could get it back to operational status.

I'd just like to chime in; I, too, just CANNOT wait. After my 8000ED croaked (after only 50 rolls or so of 120), and Nikon told me they couldn't fix it due to lack of parts––yes, 8000ED is now officially EOL/unsupported––I've been looking for something to replace it with. 8000ED is out of the question, and 9000ED, esp. with recent hikes in the used prices, is likewise. Consider me a customer if this thing come in with specs that at least compete with 9000ED at a sub-2K price range.

I spoke with Plustek last week. The new 120 is now scheduled for a Sept-Oct release.

It isn't gougers, it's buyers. They don't have reasonable alternatives so they are left to compete with other buyers to get those old, unsupported scanners. The lack of new 120 film scanners leaves people to 'fight over the scraps'.

New scanners, like the upcoming Plustek 120 put some health into the hobby and we can forget about the old, obsolete, used and worn-out/burnt-out Nikon LS-9000, LS-8000 and Minolta Multi-Pro.

It's a very healthy thing and speaks well to our hobby that companies are willing to make an investment in new equipment.

Let's see if people who want a Nikon scanner will continue to pay the exorbitant prices. I do not think they will. If you have one and want to sell, now would be the time.

I have an 8000ED that I bought new, so I have no need for the virtually identical 9000, but 800ED scanners are going for stupid prices too, and I wouldn't pay them. Not envy, just business sense. I'm in business as a photographer, and I don't profit by letting price gougers f--k me.

Correct. Couldn't have said it better myself. I have an LS-5000 already and wouldn't mind an LS-9000 for medium format, but I refused to pay twice the price as retail for one. With the announcement of the Plustek a new avenue was opened. Anything involving price correction with the LS-9000 now is simply desire to see a screwed up situation resolved. Sure as he'll isn't envy.

Yes... you've outed me. Plain and simple envy. 🙄

I could go onto B&H and order a Hasselblad X5, but it doesn't mean I should or that it would be a wise investment. No one wants people to feel screwed or ripped off who've just paid exorbitant prices for a Nikon 9000, you're missing the point. I am just happy there will soon be another avenue to take so that I personally have more options than just:

A) a Good scanner in the Nikon 9000 that is getting on in years, might not be supported at all soon enough if Nikon's past history is any indication, and is extremely overpriced due to lack of production/supply

B) an amazing scanner in the Hasselblad X5 or X1 that all but requires a 15 year mortage. If you want to call me jealous, it would fit for category B.

C) old, out of date, SCSI-only Imacon scanners sold as-is by mysterious overstock/government surplus retailers on the auction website.

Anyway, hopefully now you understand our position a bit more. No one is knocking the 9000 or your decision to buy one. Feel free and enjoy. Another scanner on the market can only be beneficial for all of us.
