Been having some issues lately with silverfast SE. I seems that it will just crash in-between frames. By that I mean I have 24 negatives in strips of 6 selected and perfectly framed (by the slow method of enlarging each frame and selecting each exposure manually for absolute edge to edge sizing and adustments) then it will commence scanning with the v700. Somewhere along the line at random frame numbers and always in between frames it will simply crash. Like a time out. The error reads something like "Device not ready" or scanner not ready. something like that. I have to close down silverfast and restart it.
Damn this process is slow enough without having instability like that throwing a stick into your spokes. It doesn't always happen so it's hard to pinpoin why and under what circumstances. I'm wondering if anyone else is experiencing the same problem or can offer some advice to stop the program crashing. I have uninstalled and re-loaded silverfast and also done the update to 6.6.1. Also updated my epson drivers cause I thought there may have been a problem with those.
I don't really want to go back to using epsonscan. I can't seem to work out how do a proper batch scan in that program with the ability to select and modify individual frame areas. It's great at picking frame areas automatically but I can't seem to fine tune the frame areas when it gets the auto frame-select wrong. Anyone who has tried the auto frame select on a bunch of dark night shots will understand my problems with epsonscan. I guess it's almost perfect for daytime exposures and I will continue to use it for those where a faster workflow is desired. Unfortunately with night shots where the edges of the frame become ambiguous it really struggles to select automatically and then it's a real headache to use.
Damn scanning. It's taking all the fun out of everything.

Win 7 professional Service pack 1.
I have since heard that I am not an isolated case having this sort of issue with Silverfast SE. I think I might try the upgrade to SE8 before I throw the towel in.
Strange thing is I kinda like the program and might have considered the more professional version Silverfast Ai but this issue I'm having is a deal killer.

I am having a similar issue with Silverfast 8 SE. I have an Epson V600 (USB), and experience much the same as you--a crash between frames. Mine happens at least once per 120 roll... Can't imagine doing 35mm!
In any case, I don't think the 8 upgrade will help.

I'm using a laptop and the scanner via USB. other devices I have connected are an external hard drive via USB and a wireless mouse via USB dongle. I must check the card issue and if the in-built webcam is causing an issue.

Thanks for that. I'm not using a USB hub though. the mouse is one of those old Microsoft portable ones where the Bluetooth dongle stores underneath the mouse when not in use. I will have to try using a wired mouse and also with the portable HDD disconnected. It is a compact HDD without a power supply. I did disconnect both the mouse and hdd when I first tried to troubleshoot the problem but i cant remember if I re-booted the machine without the devices plugged in.
