Anyone traveling this holiday season?

Just curious, who's going out of town? I'll be flying out to Austin, Tx on December 15 and staying for a weekend. This is just to go party with some friends and stuff. From there I'm flying to Dallas where I'll visit family (I'm from there, haven't been home in 4 years).

Then on January 2nd I'll be leaving on an 8 day tour as a roadie for my friend's band. We'll be going as far as Austin and stopping along the way in Tempe, Tucson, New Mexico, etc.

I'm really excited, I haven't been out of Southern California in a long time.

So where are you off to this year?

BTW- It would probably be a bad idea to try to bring a tripod onto my carry-on luggage, right? I was hoping to avoid checking any baggage on my trip to Austin, but I really need to bring the tripod for a specific project and if I have to I'll just check it.

I'm currently in Chile (for work) at ESO La Silla if that counts :)

Tonight is my night off, but tomorrow we're starting a 4-night observing run.

I guess you were really asking about over the holidays though.... in which case glad to be staying home.

Last time I carried a tripod on a plane I checked it, didn't really try to carry on though. Mine was small enough to fit in my checked luggage, just about.

Off to Vancouver, B.C. on Christmas day.... cheapest available flights when I booked. Love the city... love the vibrancy... hoping to kill some Hp5 for the few days I'm there...
Cheers,j

I'm off to Ulaanbaatar, maybe a couple of days in Beijing. It will probably be like minus 30 degrees in Mongolia. Thinking to take the Contax IIa and/or the G2 plus the Contax T, wonder how they will hold up in the cold? Anyone have any suggestions for extreme cold weather shooting?

Will be at home for the holidays - alas.

I agree a tripod could be a hassle depnding on how short it collapses down to.

Perhaps a monopod while faking a bum leg? ;)

It collapses really short, and could easily fit in my carryon bag. I'm mainly worried about security thinking I could use it as a weapon.

The monopod idea isn't a bad one, but I need it for some semi long (4 seconds+) exposures with the Mamiya 6.

I'll be in the USA...Florida, New York, DC and possibly Texas...
A blend of work and catching up with friends...and a nice change from rainforest and African bush. :)

I'll be enjoying another grey Christmas at home.

Joy.

I don't even get toys any more to make it better.

I'm leaving Dec. 18 to join my family in Bordeaux, France, probably staying until June. Once there, I plan to hit other RFFers up about processing 120 film and maybe getting together. Can't wait.

Jamaica for me

Jamaica for me

My family and I will be headed to Negril, Jamaica, for X-mas and New Years. They don't know it yet. I have a shoot and I get to take the family for 12 days. This was an unplanned assignment and they are including my family for the job. God, I love being a retired photog.

I only just moved to Jerusalem in July for my job - I'll be spending Christmas in the Holy Land for the first time!

Best to all and safe travels!
Alex
