Anyone using Gimp or other free Software

I have a chance to take a friends old and abandoned iBook G4 for some upcoming travel. It's a blessing as my usual laptop is a new expensive and large MBP17". The g4 has 50gb of storage available which will be handy. I wonder if anyone has used Gimp or similar. There does not seem to be much available on this short timeline for this computer in terms of editing software. I will download DNG's from my M8 and CR2 files from my 5Deisel2.
Please make any suggestions you may have. I leave on Monday. Ordering an old version of PS elements from ebay and the like is out of the question at this point. Thanks for your replies 🙂

Apart from RAW processing (RAWtherapee) my post processing WF consists only of IrfanView, GIMP and ExifTool.

i use GIMP because i can't afford PS like Raid's students... can anyone point me to image editing tutorial for GIMP user online? i understand GIMP cover a lot of the same things of PS, but the interface/ defaults/ settings are quite different

I've decided to throw in the towel. There is not time to get a cd version of any software this computer will actually run. The downloads available are not compatible with this old and tired machine. It's a shame but, not a surprise.

You could try PixelMator. Designed especially for Mac OSX. Not expensive and downloadable.

The problem I'm having is system requirement. The OS in this machine is OSx 10.4.11. Most everything available online requires OS X 10.6 0r later. I'm afraid this old Laptop is going to become a simple kitchen table net-book for someone. I may need to just lug my big MBP17 for this trip.

My primary desktop runs PCLinuxOS. I use Gimp, DigiKam, and Raw Studio for all of my image needs. I also have Gimp on my Mac Book Pro..

Currently only Gimp works with Windows and Mac but is an excellent alternative to the over-priced PhotoShop.. It should do whatever you need from it..

I use GIMP for some post-processing on a mac book pro (actually quite little - most I can do quickly on iphoto). It does everything needed and it's free.
There is a version for Mac Os X 10.4 (can be found online), you need X11 installed.

I have used GIMP for years...can't see why I would pay for PS...there is a very good GIMP forum that is helpful in learning the in and outs of things...

GIMP, as prohotography for me is a hobby so I can live without commercial tools. It does all I need. And I can donate not pay retail price for something I underutilize.

Creative Cloud is only US$30/month right now, and it gives you the entire Adobe lineup. Eventually it will include Lightroom too.

Your time is valuable. Don't waste it wrestling with GIMP.

I use GIMP for all my image editing, and have used (and loved) Imagemagick commands in other scripts that did this and that, when I was writing scripts.

Non-pro photographers who actually purchase image editing software must have very strong reasons for doing that. I think ?

I also have Darktable loaded but my old brain has too much inertia to explore that without a really really good reason . . . 😀 . . . old dogs and new tricks and all that.

@bensyversion . . . that comes to $360 every year to edit pictures. I am not up on the latest software prices, but I imagine you could outright purchase PaintShop or PhotoShop for that much money. . . . ?


PS . . . I use UFRAW for importing RAW images into the GIMP.

i found gimp quite easy to use. of course, if u use photoshop for years and try gimp then, it's a bit confusing. but that's the same the other way round too.

I bought 2 used paperback books and they explain way more than I'll ever need to understand about using the GIMP.
You know they say "different strokes for different folks".
