Anyone using Gimp or other free Software

Not trying to get too off topic, but, actually, in many large software design projects, there will be a designer or team of designers that draw up the UI. Generally, they specialize in Human-Computer interfaces and probably know how to write code, but still, their main purpose is designing the UI for others to program.

As for GIMP: GIMP was originally built as a semester project at UC Berkeley. Currently, it has a dedicated design team, but it's possible that the original design hampered change - overhauling code can be grueling (I've needed to do it many times before :bang🙂.

I use GIMP and like it for most work. I also use Noiseware Community Edition. It's ok for light noise reduction.

GIMP looks ok if you work in JPG, but it truncates TIFF to 8 bit. I've seen Darktable, but haven't used it. User interface looks much nicer than GIMP. Is it also limited to 8 bit?

After upgrading to 2.8 I used it about a week, noted menus right in the window weren't such a bad thing (like on early Macs?) and when some non-native plugins didn't work well in 2.8 I reverted to 2.6....will wait until 2.8 and surroundings get polished. btw i'm not only one who noted multi-window UI isn't that bad, at the end 🙂

I get what Tom says about UI, coders and human interface. But then, there are very few pieces of software designed by humans for humans 🙂 I still think GIMP isn't worst what has happened to me. I can't argue if my free ride doesn't include five star extras - but then there are at least two type of people, some like to tinker and adjust, and some just pay more to get it all packaged and delivered. No problem while either don't kill to prove they are right.

If someone is ready to pay $300 per year for subscription (see above in thread) to edit his images, I can't object. I spend that money other ways. If I'd have to deliver to customers probably I'd use something other than GIMP. We live in wonderful world because we still have choices, be it software or something else. Still have.

i use GIMP because i can't afford PS like Raid's students... can anyone point me to image editing tutorial for GIMP user online? i understand GIMP cover a lot of the same things of PS, but the interface/ defaults/ settings are quite different

I'm not a fan of digital post processing, never having spent the necessary time to learn it well. But I have used GIMP since it is free and does what I want. I had never heard of UFRAW or RAWtherapee so thanks for those guys. Irfanview I have know of for years but not used much. It used to be used in forensics.

i downloaded gimp yesterday. seems to be mostly for color work. i found some of the tools to be easier to use than on photoshop. windows live gallery remains the easiest to use editing software for simple tasks that i have found. i would rate gimp with picassa so far ...

Thank you for hint! Will look later....reverted to 2.6 because of Resynthesizer which didn't work under 2.8...probably some of this filters replace it...may be there are ways to do same without resynthesizer.

For batch processing, adding borders, watermark, etc. There is nothing that can beat ImageMagick and a little bit scripting.

For post-processing photos, don't overlook darktable.
That's the closest to Lightroom (in terms of purpose, in terms of philosophy, they are miles away) that you can get for free.

GIMP is parallel to Photoshop.

+1, at least that's the way it works in properly run development teams.

I did this as part of the Macromedia FreeHand team for nearly a decade. The "visible" portions of features were designed by people who knew UI design and knew how the software was used in the real world. Programmers only designed the "hidden" bits that made it work.

I don't have any experience of GIMP but i have used imverter.com....It's a free online image converter that converts image formats. From there, you can convert it into anything else you want. It works very well on any platform.

The only problem I have with the GIMP (I have used it for years) is the 8bit limitation. It kind of makes shooting RAW images pointless because you end up with an 8bit JPG coming out of the GIMP, same as the camera puts out !

I wait for GIMP2.10 !
