Apple's attitude to photography ... 'Stop learning, we'll do the work for you!'

"Technical ignorance" and "overpriced"

Are we talking about Apple or Leica?

To stay on topic I will say I quite like my iphone! Especially that it takes pictures.

I use Mac because I come from a Unix/Linux world and Mac uses a Linux-like system under the hood. Command line scripts and programming on the Mac is familiar to me. If I had spent a lot of time using Windows/DOS, I might feel differently.

Tom

Actually, it is a long-running joke is that MS still has DOS under the hood.

Of course, it is a mistake to think that all scientists know a lot about computers. I do not encourage colleagues to switch to OS X - if they are clueless on Windows box they will be just as clueless on a Mac , and then they will ask me for help.

Randy

Roger, you do know that Apple sells its products world wide, right?
Yes, I was merely quoting Mencken. If you prefer, omit "American" from the quote to read "Nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the public."

Remember: 50% of people are of below average intelligence.

Cheers,

R.

Michael, since Macs have a unix foundation, and can still run office applications, they have been the platform of choice for many scientists like me.

Randy

Hi Randy.

I don`t really know why she feels like that other than the fact that she gave many presentations before completing her PhD. It seems every ones weapon of choice ,at least in the UK ,was a PC .
The odd one who turned up with a Mac encountered connectivity issues.
Other than that I think there is a sense that they`re just a bit to consciously trendy :)
Who knows ....I certainly don`t .
My sense is the same as Frank ...clean software design so they appeal to me.

Well, Leica M users generally know how to set ISO, focus, aperture and shutter speed, so I'm not quite sure where "technical ignorance" comes in to it, and if you want either a film rangefinder camera with a track record of over 80 years or a current-production digital rangefinder camera, I'm not sure where "overpriced" comes in to it either.

I used to work at a University and a museum and in both cases the only Mac users were Hipsters and the graphic design department the rest used PCs some with Linux but most with windows. I use all three but I am not a scientist. Also Apple has changed a lot in the last years from a working tool to a hipster toy. They still produce some decent computers but the rest of their products is just overly expensive dreck.

Not sure how apple does it but the clean design of the hardware and the software, and how everything is so nice to use is great. Because of this they are able to sell at a higher price than similarly spec'ed products.

There is room for improvement: I'd like to see iPads, iPods, and iPhones with USB ports and transferable memory keys, and get rid of the iTunes layer.
Eh? If you've only ever used Apple, I've no doubt they're great. But if you learned on anything else and are able to read and write, my experience is they are (to be generous) counter-intuitive.

Cheers,

R.

This is the basic problem. Quite a few of my friends use Apples, and I have no problem with this. It's just when they start raving on about how much better Apple is than what I regard as real computers that I get annoyed. Yes, Apples are fine if you want to pay a handsome premium for a computer that does exactly the same as a PC, albeit in a slightly different way, and to feel cool and righteous about it. But feeling cool and righteous is not the same as understanding what you are doing.

In Europe use of PCs was rigidly enforced for a long time, IT departments there seem even more dictatorial than in the US. So yes, connectivity would be an issue.

Truthfully, connectivity issues are exacerbated by Apple, which delights in 'innovating' new connector styles every six months or so.

Dear Randy,

It was? Apples have been used in publishing and graphic arts (famously refuges of the technologically challenged) for as long as I can remember personal computers (as distinct from PCs) being in use.

Cheers,

R.

I've used both. My experience was/is more favorable towards apple/Mac.

Just another bit of info: My daughter's art school (university) is based on Macs.

And mine is the exact opposite. My wife agrees. We've both used both. To anyone who prefers Apple, I repeat: fine. No problem. It's just when Apple users start inventing "advantages" that they start to look foolish.

As for the art school: what of it? Presumably one of the original lecturers (when it was still an art school, before it started pretending to be a university) preferred Apple. And?

I gave my last Apple away to a friend who prefers them. To repeat: I have nothing against computers that do exactly the same as Windows-based machines. I just can't see why Apple users are so defensive about their idiosyncratic, expensive choices.

Cheers,

whoah I didn't realize this was an anti-apple thread in disguise.

I personally don't care for computers and technological advances much. For computers, I'm a PC person because they are generally cheaper. I don't own a smart phone because I don't care for one.

I can't speak for others, but I'm not anti-Apple. I'm just anti- those who pretend, on the basis of evidence detectable only to Apple apologists, that Apple is somehow better than PC. Either preference is fine. Windows users tend to admit this rather more willingly than Apple users. Of course there are Linux users who point to real advantages but Linux is more hassle than most of us want to get in to.

Cheers,

You're sounding not only defensive but angry as well. I'm chill. :)

If there is any anger here, you are the one who is reading it into the conversation. As for defensiveness, really, that is pure fantasy on your part. What have I to defend? That I don't care for Apples?

Cheers,

R.
