New York April NYC Meet-Up

Black canvas Domke F6 here:
2 bodies, most often 3 lenses and the small stuff. I'll try to make it on the 21st for "bagfest":D.

That sucks... looks like we will have to move to Jimmy's 43 if it happens... ;)

I'm getting displaced in November when my lease is up. I have to find a new home, It seems like I'm for sure getting displaced from Spanish Harlem. Building went condo ant the usual rent gouging forces Maggie and me to find a better deal. It was a short two years. Oh-well.

Looking to move downtown.

Shall we have Bagfest 2013 at Puck Fair?

GEAR ALERT: Tomorrow I will be getting my $599.00 M4 back from Sherry. I got a complete overhaul, a M3 film advance lever, and a M6 eye piece to protect my glasses.

I get the opportunity to actually meet Sherry as she has other business in NYC. This camera was a shelf queen with intact "L" seal that was sold at ADORAMA priced as being "F" condition because of having a gummy shutter, but really was in "E" condition except for a small piece of missing leatherette that gets disguised by use of a TA Rapidgrip.

This camera looks awesome with my chrome 50 Lux ASPH.

Move to the island Cal!!

Move to the island Cal!!

Already live on an Island that I call Madhattan.

"Maggie" wants a doorman so we are looking for something like we have now. Right now it looks like UES or Financial District has the most selection, and living in a high rise will be new.

Move to NewarK !!!!!!!! LOL
Dirt cheap rent, and all the Portuguese/Spanish food you can eat for the price of pizza in Manhattan... What more can you ask for....

Yes, Harlem was a bust last time.

So, now the good deal became a regularly priced camera? ;)

Fidel,

I have to deal with "Woman Factor." I found a duplex with 1.5 baths, and that means having a darkroom, found a loft on the upper west side that would be one huge man cave, but because of old lady factor I need a luxury building with a doorman.

In the past I risked getting beat up every day when I lived in Greenpoint a decade and a half ago; lived on the Southside of Williamsburg before it was conquered by hipsters; lived in an abandoned part of LIC where if you needed to go to a drugstore I had to take the subway to Madhattan... but now "Maggie" is feeling old and vulnerable.

Right now I live in Spanish Harlem where 25% of the inhabitants live in public housing, and I'm very close to Metropolitan Hospital, a public hospital that likely has the best trauma unit for stabbings and gunshots because of vast experience.

No dangers here, relatively safe compared to other places, remember, Newark is pretty big, depends where you live in it.. . and we have University Hospital, which is also NJ's best trauma hospital for gunshots... :)

No doormen here though..

John,

An overhaul costs $275.00 for labor and $45.00 for parts. Sherry is a factory trained by Leica, and an overhaul is very different than just a CLA.

I "Calvinized" the M4 by adding the M3 film advance and added the M6 eye piece to avoid trashing another pair of expensive glasses. Truely luxury items that are not necessary that personalize my camera like adding a Rapidgrip. I intend on keeping this camera the rest of my life like it is treasure. The only thing that might be added in the future is replacing the vulcanite with leather.

$320.00 plus $599.00 equals $919.00: still kinda cheap considering that it is factory fresh, but I agree that the luxury items I had added on push the M4 over the edge.

I expect that because the M4 has brass gears that it is or eventually will be smoother than my Wetzlar M6 which has steel gears. For me the upgrades and modifications to my M6 were well worth it and I now have a very unique camera that was especially made for me. Mucho cheaper than a new Leica MP.

Would you call my M4 a "Monster"? LOL.

Fidel,

Metropolitan Hospital is about two blocks away from where I live.

Because I have a boring day job I did the research. Generally if you get shot once and a vital organ is not damaged you have about 2 hours to get to an emergency room before you bleed out, and you have an 80% chance of survival.

But if you suffer multiple gunshot wounds, even if no vital organs are damaged, you only have about a 20% survival rate.

I bet there are lots of NYC doormen living in Newark.

Nah, I'd call it a damn nice camera. I just don't when you are going to use all of these... :p

John,

Only a mad man would own so much gear and try to use it all. It has become a liability to use all my gear to maintain them all. I discovered that I have very strong attachments and somehow my cameras have become an extension of my personality and identity.

I added up my costs of gear and now I know that over the past five years I have spent tens of thousands of dollars.

Later today after work I will pick up the M4.

You guys ever meet at a darkroom? I'd like to meet up and make some prints.

Some guys are members of the Camera Club of New York. I've modeled for them using the studio at CCNY.

Generally we have shoot-outs where we gather to go shooting. Some events are the Mermaid Parade, and we do Long Island City "Death Marches" where large groups of camera nerds go unnoticed in industrial areas where there is no residential housing.

I'd say the best place to get wounded in the world (with regard to survival rate) is near a Marine Combat Trauma Unit. (I've gotta wave my flag high.)
These days we have so many young disabled veterans because so many of us are surviving wounds that were formerly fatal. Amazing really.

So, back to camera geek stuff...
