New York April NYC Meet-Up

I'm getting displaced in November when my lease is up. I have to find a new home, It seems like I'm for sure getting displaced from Spanish Harlem. Building went condo ant the usual rent gouging forces Maggie and me to find a better deal. It was a short two years. Oh-well.

Looking to move downtown.

You should move further uptown Cal. Three apartments for sale in my building! Cheap! You can buy all three and still have plenty-o-cash left over for more gear!

Keith,

I was looking to rent not buy, but we were liking/loving Washington Heights for a while. Lots of space for the money, but for health reasons I have had to avoid the cold AMAP and a more downtown adds mucho convenience. We also checked out at 119th and Third, but that area is asking to be a crime statistic. I know I stand out in a crowd, but "Maggie" really stood out. I've been out at night in that area passing through, but to live there is another thing.

Woman Factor, meaning Maggie and old lady factor, is making us move more downtown.

Also know that basically if its cold outside I have to stay at home and I'm not able to go shooting like I normally would. The comfort and higher rent thus becomes more important. Also know that somehow we found a rent stabilized brand new luxury building that was originally built as condos, but now that's unwinding and a big rent increase will push us out. We downsized to afford luxury, but now we are spoiled.

Ideally I need to live close to work, and I need a gym to stay active because I have to hibernate over the winter. Again Maggie wants a doorman.

Cal

PS if I sold some of my gear, I would have a large down payment, no lie, but my lifestyle and identity is a slacker who lives passionately to shoot.

Cal Repair Service.

Cal Repair Service.

Shall we have Bagfest 2013 at Puck Fair?

GEAR ALERT: Tomorrow I will be getting my $599.00 M4 back from Sherry. I got a complete overhaul, a M3 film advance lever, and a M6 eye piece to protect my glasses.

I get the opportunity to actually meet Sherry as she has other business in NYC. This camera was a shelf queen with intact "L" seal that was sold at ADORAMA priced as being "F" condition because of having a gummy shutter, but really was in "E" condition except for a small piece of missing leatherette that gets disguised by use of a TA Rapidgrip.

This camera looks awesome with my chrome 50 Lux ASPH.

Cal,
Hanging with Sherry?

Maybe she'll recruit you. You'll be repairing before you know it.

Sherry did a great job on the M4. With an overhaul the camera was a bit stiff and the shutter really loud for a Leica, but it is smoothing out nicely. The film advance now like my M6, but the shutter is still becoming more quiet.

Been shooting the Monochrom over the weekend. Ran into Damaso on the M96 bus yesterday. Did some bonehead shooting with the MM: tried to take a quick shot without having the camera turned on thinking it was a film camera. Miss ed a lot of street shots because of this. With the 28 Cron now my target range is 3-4 feet because of chimping. I'm really able to get in peoples' faces with a quick shot with the Monochrom. I'm talking head and shoulder shots with a 28. Bam.

I guess with background noise you wouldn't have heard any shutter noise.. Come to think of it.......... I'm surprised it even depressed.

Its kinda interesting how a camera settles in after an overhaul. When My Wetzlar M6 came back from Sherry it was both stiff and loud, so much so that I was disappointed.

Today at work just exercising the camera its now a totally different camera than this morning. Also the brass gears of the M4 are a lot smoother than the M6's brass gears.

I know what you mean Cal, my new Fuji X100s was so stiff when I got it... and even after I exercised it...it is still stiff. I guess I gotta give it a few more weeks... oh wait, uh, nevermind...

4 more sleeps and i'll be home sweet home!

Joe,

I stopped by 85th and Madision at "Artbag" to get some business cards. You can pick your own swatch of leather and have a custom bag made up. It takes 4-6 weeks to be made to order. The man bag selection surprisingly is limited. I want a brief case even though I don't need one: they are that nice. If you are near the upper east side in your wanderings check the place out.

Cal

Cal, we are going to get a beat down if you start walking around your neighborhood with a briefcase when we are photographing. ;)

John,

As you know I kinda present myself as a tourist attraction. I like to think that I'm one of the reasons why people come to New York. This is why I tend to meet so many people.

I think you meet the local wackjobs more than tourists though... ;)

Tourists are a royal pain, they just totally get in the way of street shooting:bang:.

They get in the way of movement or most anything.
They gather in groups of 6-10, stand at corners in the west village or somewhere with narrower sidewalks than the avenues midtown, stop there, look at a map, point and stare up at the sky and never cease to halt the progress of humanity.
I find myself complaining about these groups to other friends here and they say "Phil, you have become a jaded New Yorker. Welcome!"
End of rant.

Do you mean that they get hit in the crossfire?
I don't really mind them showing up in my photographs, even though they don't act with the same confidence as the locals.
