Just bought a Leica UVa filter - 13 131 Filter E 39 UVA

I was told by the store it was multi coated and paid a very high price for it (65 USD), thinking it's the best filter in the market.

I looked at the reflection on the filter side by side with a real MRC filter (B+W) and a plain glass filter. It looks very much like the non-MRC filter - strong reflection, not tinted.

Is it possible?
If so, why is this filter so %$&& expenssive?

OK,
I'm going to return this crappy filter to the seller and buy another "non-Leica" filter instead.
I want a filter with a good coating because the lens I use ('cron 40) is prone to flare.
Heliopan or B+W?

B+W MRC filters are top and easier to get, here in the US at least (B+H or Adorama, www.2filter.com). Often KEH has good used ones, too.

Best,

Roland.

Leica UV filters are single coated. They are expensive because they have L E I C A engraved on the ring.

B+W and Heliopan are both good. B+W are easier to find, get an MRC (multi-resistant coated) UV filter and you will be all set.

All the Leica filters I own are horrible - they seem to come loose and wobble around after a year or so of use and cleaning. I have to agree, a B+W filter is my first choice. You'll notice the difference the moment it's taken out of its box.

Heliopan is considered the best, with B+W a close second. In all that I have ever read, Leica filters are not multicoated. I understand they are plain schott glass, unless the are UV coated or color filters for B&W photography.

Oh dear! Wish I'd read this before shelling out for a Leica UV filter earlier today. The only consolation is that I suppose I can claim to be a purist (with no money left).....
