Finally got my hands on this camera yesterday (J&R - NYC). Smaller than I expected, nice EVF, fast AF, but something left me cold. Perhaps it just reminded me of a hipper Panasonic G series camera (which I'm not big on). No doubt though that people will be capable of great images with the camera.
 
My OM-1, IMO is better than this OM-D....why? cause it's film, doesn't have a tilt screen, and is robust.

Not to offend you OM-D lovers out there...

No, but I bet once you've beaten the snot out of that kraken, you can retrieve your OM-D at the bottom of the ocean and it'll still work :p
 
So I just got back from the Coldplay concert in Seattle and tried out my OM-D (with 12-50mm). Taking a quick look, I'm not believing what the images that I shot at 3200 & 6400 ISO look like! With this being my first attempt at video, I definitely need some practice (especially in focus lock!).

Oh yeah, the concert was fantastic!

Played with the om-d + zuiko lens lineup today at michaels camera in Melbourne - they had the olympus reps there. Learned a few things:

1. I prefer the black finish - looks meaner.

2. Olympus rep confirmed 100% that the sensor is NOT made by Panasonic. He wouldn't say who it was made by, but hinted at Aptina. From looking at pictures on the back of the screen, the 'tone' and handling of contrast/highlights is completely different from the panasonic sensored m4/3 cameras IMO - seems more like a larger sensor camera which is excellent.

3. The EVF is very good, the AF is lightening, but annoying and unpredictable in multi mode - better in single center spot mode.

4. Body size is awesome - tiny and sharp/angular. Almost too small, but not quite.

5. The handgrip is AMAZING. Makes the camera feel near-perfect.

6. The 12mm lens actually looks good in silver with the black e-m5 body. Didn't expect that.

7. Shutter is very muffled and very nice sounding, and you can really feel the mechanism through the body. It's quite a pleasant sensation.

8. I found the menu/quick menu a little sluggish - thought my x100 menu navigation was snappier.

9. kit 12-50mm lens felt a bit yuck - zoom ring really grainy and weird.

10. The IS mechanism is incredible and so extremely effective. You can also see the effects through the EvF which is great.

11. The tilt screen is really nice - the way it works means it doesn't affect durability, and it isn't bulky or loose or anything.

I could possibly buy one for myself, after I get one for my dad. My x100 and the om-d with that 12mm f2 could be a pretty serious combo.

gavin i'm glad you had such a positive experience with the omd, i am really liking mine as i learn how to shoot it and what the optimal settings are, which really does take some time.

however i am most interested in your comment 10, as i read this in several other places as well, but i have not found that i CAN see the effect in the vf. i have no doubt there IS a very real effect, but for the life of me, turning off the IS and viewing the screen with a 135, and turning on the IS with the same lens yields no discernible difference in the 'shake' i see through the vf. it definitely makes a difference in the quality of the pictures, but i dont see any difference at all in the vf.

would you have any suggestion as to settings beyond turning on and off IS that makes the effect visible in the vf?

Got one!

I had put my name on a list for a silver body-only at newtonville, and surprise surprise, it came in this week.

have only had time to fondle it a bit, seems lovely. it's a birthday present so my wife is not "allowing" me to take it out yet. bday is on may 8... i don't think i'll be waiting that long, but i'll humor her for a few days (maybe until the weekend :) )

i've got the panny 20 and leica m and nikon f adapters (all previously used on my ep1). looking forward to it.

film is getting expensive :(
 
I couldn't vote in the poll because the options are biased towards polar extremes.

Tony,

You should be able to see it, it definitely works. Just turn IS off, and have a look at a subject through the EVF and give the camera some really small vigorous shakes. Then turn it on and do the same thing - you should feel like the image in the EVF is almost 'floating' in an abnormally smooth way.

I have tested out the OM-D, it's not to my liking...

Furthermore i did not mean to just say "one is better than the other." Secondly if i remember correctly this was a Poll, so expect opinions from other people...
 
^ the film and robust drum is a tired one to beat (like "it's not the camera, but the photographer"). It often doesn't add much to the discussion unless a person takes the effort back it up with specific examples.

Gavin, or other OM-D users, can you program the camera so that AF has a dedicated button (i.e. separate it from the shutter release)?
