Are you happy with what you have?

I would like to have a second RF body - either M6 or MP - and I would like to have the modern Summilux versions of the lenses I have (35 asph, 50 asph). I often need a 28mm but lately I have been just using my Contax Zeiss 28 with an adapter. I do eventually want to replace my Canon and its glass with a digital rangefinder, possibly the M9.

Other than these relative pipe dreams, I am very happy with my setup. Getting some adapters to use my Zeiss glass on my Leica and my Canon really opened things up for me but I can do most of what I need with 35mm and 50mm lenses and film.

my stupid question

my stupid question

Ok, here's my stupid question. I guess this is the place to ask it.....
I often read about people wanting more/the latest equipment, and having GAS.
What is GAS? I'm guessing: Gear - something - something?
Thanks.
By the way. I'm very happy with what I have. A Leica M8 with one Leica Elmarit 2.8, and all the other lenses CV - and, one of my favorites, my HOLGA. I love my Holga, all $27 dollars of it. Lots of fun.
Stephen.

I always resist questions about happiness because I think it is way overrated and that there are more important things about life, like sharing and justice.

No. Nothing is more important. As the Buddha himself said, 'All sentient beings desire happiness and the causes of happiness, and the avoidance of suffering and the causes of suffering.'

The key is all sentient beings. Selfish happiness (without e.g. sharing and justice) is a shallow, cheap short of happiness.

If sharing and justice don't make you happy, question why you support them.

Cheers,

R.

I know it as Gear Acquisition Syndrome.

I have a Nikon D40 with kit lens, Zorki 4k with Jupiter 8, and an Olympus RC. So no. I'd Leica Leica(digital or film, not too bothered to be honest).

i'm very happy with what I have. However, there are 3 items that i want for sure in the future
- a 50mm Summilux pre-asph chromed
- a collapsible summicron
- a chromed Leica MP a la carte with cognac leather !

I'm right in the middle of changing careers, which now makes me a hobbyist instead of a professional. Because of the change, I'm free to sell and buy gear b/c of my wants, not due to what is required for work.

And what was my first action? Sell all of my DSLR gear and buy an M6 (1997) and current version of the 50mm Summicron. Now I'm happy as a clam - simplicity, and Leica magic!

simplicity - yes!....magic...mmm?, don't you ever want or need to do some close-up or sports/action stuff?
Dave.

I'm happy with what I have, but then again, I might win the lottery some day. Should I do so, I'd get an M9, an a-la-carte M7 (to complement my M6TTL), Mamiya M7II and 43, 50, 65 and 80 lenses, Cooke PS945, Schneider 110 SSXL, maybe a Bessa III, a Betterlight back for the Ebony, etc.

It's fun to read about new toys and, if my local camera store gets an M9 in stock, I'll definitely want to play with one.

Since I got an M3 and had my 50mm Summicron DR serviced they are all I use in 35mm and I no longer look for gear. I have no idea if this permanent but I can't think of anything else I really need in the film line.

An M9 would be great but a trip to Mars is more likely.

I am very happy with my M8's. The quality of the files more than makes up for it's quirks. The only thing I would want is a digital back for my Blads which is still out of reach for me. Yes I still love film, just don't have the time to develop and wet scan each negative. Maybe when I retire [if I still can] and the kids are gone, I'll have the time [if they're still making film]. Right now for me, the M8 bridges the gap of excellent quality pictures [11x14] and time.

I think that our happiness should be determined by our photographs, not our gear, and many of my best photos have been made with some very inexpensive gear. That holds true for things that I photographed "just because" as well as things that I shot on asignment.

I'm very content with the 35mm gear that I have. I hope to find a good MF camera one day. My biggest downfall is that I don't shoot as much as I should to become proficient.

I am happy and I am not happy that I like what I have so much...

If I were a bit less attached to some item for "sentimental reasons" I would sell a lot of crap like Leica lenses and bodies and Nikon F gear and old view cameras and OM stuff and buy a four heads light set which would surely improve my pictures much more than any RF can or even maybe consider a digital back...

But then again, I don't because I actually enjoy them, so I guess the answer is "yes".

What helped me to reduce my desire for new gear was buying a Bessa R and a Bessa T. Saving up and getting something reasonable in the first place may be a wiser decision for the beginning camera aficionado/a compared with spending a lot of money on different, less capable cameras that end up on the shelf, in the box, in the trash anyhow.

But on the other hand, I had some fun with fixing the pad of a Yashica Electro, with going into the innards of the Pouva Start's simple shutter, with fixing two Olympus Trips, disassembling the Jupiter 8 and Industar 61 L/D and studying the Zorki 4.

I share the same sentiment! the bessa R is so much more reliable than some of the other purchases i made off the auction site!

My RF kit consist of an M6, 28 elmarit and 50 cron, and I'm happy with that set up. Though I admit that every now and then, in low light when I struggle with 1/8 and can not use or don't bring my flash, I wish I had a faster lens.
So, I'm happy with what I have now ... but I'll be happier if I have a fast lens:D

It's the wanting that makes me happy. Once I get it, I put it on the shelf and I have to want something else to be happy. Sometimes, when it comes in the mail, I don't even bother to open the box.

some ppl like photography discussion ,some ppl just like to relish their gears without shoot even one pic.

you might not say that any of them are wrong
