Are you into DSLR's

I'm with Gene. An SLR photography site, digital and analog, 35mm and MF, would be a nice complement to RFF, since most members also have and shoot SLR's. That would also solve the issues of OT posts, non-RF shots in the gallery. I don't have a DSLR (any longer), and have not been posting there.

Then again, if there were a DSLRexchange contest giving away a D200, I think it would not be a ghost town much longer. 😉

Every friday I meet at a local pub with friends, five out of six own a dSLR and one out of six is not interested in photography 🙂

I feel the time is nearing for me to take the plunge, but with my budget already
seriously busted I'm waiting for pricing on the entry-level models to head south of
$500. I can't see myself getting serious enough about DLRs to even go mid-range, but there are things which do appeal to me.
I was all set to make plans to buy a Maxxum 5D and then the sky fell. Could I be
satisfied with the same thing under the Sony name? Not if it uses Memory Sticks.
So far nobody makes one I even like, so any purchase in the short term would entail
making lots of compromises.
In the meantime, I have my Panasonic FZ-15, and I have never been disappointed with its performance except for pokey AF--just the nature of the beast.

As one wag put it - "Maybe DSLR users don't need a forum - they already know everything."

Best Regards,

Bill Mattocks, DSLR user. hehehehe.

Perfect, Bill, just perfect. Pentax recently cut the price on one of their DSLRs--have you been fairly pleased with yours?

Why not just pick up a used Canon DSLR from ebay? Those are great.

Ok, this will sound like hearsay. If you are happy with your super zoom, why buy a DSLR? Does work require it? If you are hear, you also have a film camera… you could just buy a good scanner. Just a thought.

Larger sensor, superior high iso performance, raw processing... that's just to name a few...

Only good if you need em or will at least use em. Hey, I have 3 rangfinders (ok, one is on order), and 2 DSLRs... so I know the advatages. THey are not really needed by everyone though. Film can out do digital so bad it isn't even funny, but it does cost for every single shot.

I like my RF's but my first love is a 35 and MF SLR. I love macro and wildlife and nature and would like to see a site for film SLR users not to have to compete against $6000 cameras and $3000 lenses. Then to have some snob that doesnt' know a daffodil from a dalhia ignore my photo taken with a $500 F1 and an $800 500L lens and to comment not bad taken with an antique. So yeah I would like to see a site for the use of SLR's

Thrilled, just ecstatic. The only complaint - I used a coworker's D200 and it is much better. But then again, three times the price. I bought my *ist DS body-only from Cameta Camera in Amityville, NY - great folks, done business with them online and in person. I believe the body was $600 something. I have since matched it up with a Sigma AF 28-105 f2.8 lens, it's ok but not great. I know it's not great because I also have a P/K mount 50mm SMC Pentax-A f1.7 that *is* great, and a M42 Pentax SMC 50mm f1.4 that is beyond insanely great. It is just the coolest camera ever - except for my Bessa R and my Bessaflex.

Many thanks. The bulk of my lenses are M42 and PK, so this may be my answer.
I still like Minolta's anti-shake, though...

NoTx, valid points and very sensible. Probably why I haven't done that yet. I really
dislike computers and tend not to think in the direction of peripherals, but I know I
need to get a scanner at some point. Gee, then maybe I could have a gallery, huh?

If the bulk of your lenses are M42 and Pentax K then that is a huge incentive to buy a Pentax istDS. Pentax is the only DSLR that can use lenses clear back from the beginning of their SLR line, not to mention it has the best viewfinder of any consumer/prosummer/whatever DSLR out there.

Well, it is not better than the afore-mentioned D200. Again, big difference in price. But even though I have the *ist DS and love it, I can't say that it has the 'best' DSLR viewfinder anymore. Still excellent, though.

Bill,

That what I get for speaking too broadly. I haven't had a chance to look through a D200 yet, but the istDS is defintiely better than the D70, D50, 10D, 20D, etc. that I normally think of. For a person on a DSLR budget the isDS is tought to beat, especially if they already have a supply of M42 or PK lenses on hand.

Best regards,

Don
