Arles 2010 meeting

This is so tempting.. I`ll be on a holiday in the Switzerland w/ my family at the time, some 8 hours driving from Arles.. I was toying with the idea to visit Arles from Switzerland but I think it won`t work - I`d prefer not to spend half of my holiday behind the wheel and our little son doesn`t enjoy being in a car during the day either. So perhaps I could plan my summer holiday better for next year. I wish all those that will visit Arles to have great time, I hope I`ll be enjoying myself taking pictures of Alps and nothern Italy instead of viewing them in France. 🙂
 
Received today my 12 rolls of Kodachrome to use during the week in Arles, just hope to find the right colors there ! But I'll have a few deltas with me, just in ccaes...

PS I'll stay at Mas des Piboules, Fourques, a little outside Arles, hope not too far.

Can't wait, but which camera to take?
The small and comfortable Leica M, the Contax 645 for flexibility and outstanding IQ.
BUt how about the wildlife in the Camargue I like to shoot too. That calls for long glass on a digital body, or at least a slr. So many choices and decisions. Wish I had just one camera.

I always find that if I try to fit in too many things -- Arles AND wildlife, for example -- I end up dping neither/none of them well.

It's normally quite hot, so you don't want to be carrying lots of heavy kit, and you don't want to leave it at the hotel/campsite or in the car, so less is more.

I'll have an M9 and two lenses: 35 Summilux and 75 Summicron. Frances will have either an MP or an R2, with 50 Summarit and 18 Zeiss. And we may carry an old M2 or an M8 as a backup.

You're right of course. Probably end up with an M7 and few lenses.
We camp at the sea in the middle of the Camargue. The plan is to rent a bicycle and explore the Camargue in the early morning. Probably keep a 135 elmarit at hand just for that.

my plan is M7+35 and 50 mm lenses. As back up (and short distance ) FM 2 + 50mm 1,4 AIS. This reminds me that I have the 20mm F2,8 for the FM2 when I have no 20 mm lens for the leica (too expensive!). Not sure yet what my wife Simo will use.

Well, I'll be staying on the camp-site of Arles from 5th - 12th as I was too late to book anything except about a 28-star [approx.] hotel, with my local transport courtesy of a hired bicycle. Travelling from home via Brussels then a TGV to Nimes. The online booking thingy doesn't want to work at the moment, so I hope someone fixes it tomorrow morning during the working week.

Regarding camera stuff ? Well, I expect to be going to Arles to look and absorb, rather than to make photos - plus I shan't leave much gear behind in the tent each day of course. Just one M body and 21/50, maybe the little Rollei 35 too for colour. (And more film than I expect to need).

I know what you mean about the 28-star hotel! I once left booking too late too...

As for absorb, etc., yes, absolutely, but the place is INCREDIBLY photogenic.

I had my camper on the same camp site last year, about 15-20 mins [uphil!!] in to town by bicycle and 10 mins back.
The "ateliers SNCF" exhibitions [at least half of the shows and where portfolio reviews are held] are halfway between the two.
Get yourself a weeks "pro" badge that lets you into everything.

Dear Roger, I just look again at your reports from previous Arles visit and I'm really impressed by the variety of photo opportunities. I'm a little (just a little!) afraid to be ...confused when in Arles about what to photograph and how ! Maybe better just to concentrate on looking at exhibitions at leat in the beginning ! ciao

There's LOTS to shoot, with a minimal outfit, so it'll just come naturally. See you Tuesday! We're off tomorrow...

(Although the site said it started on the 5th, the latest information is the 3rd. But I doubt anyone will miss much by arriving later. We're stopping at a spa on the way and not arriving until Monday).

Hi all, unfortunately, I won't be able to attend this year's Arles meeting. 🙁

Some important invoices are still open, and business could be better. I do hope things will look better next year.

I wish you all interesting and inspiring days in Arles, and I hope that I'll be able to come next year.
 
Hmmm, no-one has posted after Arles ?

I got safely back home to this corner of NL to discover that the warm weather there (hotter than Arles) ended in a large storm, followed a day later by an even bigger one.

The TGV worked out fine and the campsite was even nearer the towncentre than I'd expected, so easy walking distance to almost everywhere. The Abbaye de Montmajour was only a twenty minute, one euro, bus-ride so that was ok as well.

There is a lot to see in Arles, and the official program of events is only about half of the possibilities. I even saw a student-photographer with his 'gallery' set up in a garage down a backstreet - he laughed about it and said 'if you lift a stone round here you will find an exhibition underneath'.

With the rest of my holiday plans it will be a few weeks before I get through the developing and contacting of the film I shot. Roger was right, Arles really is photogenic.

And not forgetting that it was very interesting to meet up with Robert & Simo, Michiel and Roger & Francis in Place Voltaire. Lots of interesting discussion, some of it even related to photography 🙂

Unless I am up a mountain somewhere (another hobby), I'll go again next year.

Simo and me had a good time in Arles, but the temperature...
Martin is right: there are photo everywhere, official or alternative, many different styles. I feel we only saw 40 % of what was to be seen. In some cases even difficult to decide which exhibition to see. As secret lover of Polaroid I appreciated much the two exhibition about. But also saw good B&W and color pictures. Due to my age how could I have not appreciated the great exhibition about Mick Jagger ? It s a pity that Leibovitz pictures were missing alhough mentioned on the catalog, but we guess the reason. In some cases even the location were interesting. I shot 10 rolls of K 64 (just send for development, hope to receive back end of august) and two rolls of fuji (provia and velvia) the first day, just to warm up! Simo shot about 10 rolls c41 which I'll edit in the next days in order to prepare a collection out of it. My main computer is out for upgrading so i cannot scan and post anything now. I'll do later. For sure we plan to go to Arles again next year and maybe we'll look for a small place anywhere to show some of our pictures! It was good to meet friends from RFF and we arre waiting to read Roger's report about Arles. Ciao,

My 2010 report is with the webmaster and should (insh'Allah) appear soon: about 6000 words and 44 pictures. For comparison I normally reckon on 60,000 words and 250 pictures for a whole book...

It was great to meet Martin, Robert and others and I hope there'll be more there next year. (Including Cam. Where are you, Cam?)

If I have time I'll collect my 8 rolls of velvia this week. Then the wedding backlog has to be done. Then more weddings. Scanning these slides is scheduled for this winter. Or maybe next winter.

@ Michiel: I like winter time (not so hot as a few days ago!) and I'll wait to see some of your Arles pictures. Hope that meantime my KR64 will be back (and I'll have scanned as well!) so we'll have something to see...ciao
