I'm planning on visiting Arles for the expedition next July. How far ahead must i make hotel reservations for the opening week? - one or two months, six months, now, or last year?
To be on the safe side, as soon as the dates for the Rencontres are known. This is normally 5-8 months in advance. "Organization" and "Rencontres" are not always words you use in the same sentence.
The later you book, the harder it is to find hotels that are (a) central and (b) affordable. But I've booked (30 minutes walk away, at a price) at a month or two before the Rencontres.
Cheers,

Ah! Here's the thread.
I did go; met some of you guys (all for the very first time!) I really liked Arles, and there were good exhibits, some really bad exhibits, and most were just as you'd expect (the meh kind). I was there only for about five days, and had to work half the day for half the time I was there, so I'm sure I would have absorbed more if I had had lots more time.
I really enjoyed the chats with Roger et al (btw, I still have to send you an e-mail and photos, Roger! --I've been so busy that I haven't had time to process most photos). Time slips by my fingers.
Cheers.

I was in hospital ... I'm better now, but it's not really OK, I have a tooth superinfected and wait for the surgery now (perhaps next Monday) - many surgeons are on vacation in July.
I am very sad not to have been available the first week, and not being able to meet you. I hope that next year it will be possible to have a party of RFF in my garden!

Great to see you too! Sorry you were so busy, and so short of time, and that we couldn't spend more time together. Maybe next year...
Cheers,

Sorry I didn't respond to your e-mails, but I didn't pick them up until I got home. The tooth sounds like very depressing news. Good luck with it and bonne courage -- and see you next year, insh'Allah.

Revolution is in the air at this year's Les Rencontres d'Arles, with exhibitions on the Mexican revolution and the Spanish civil war, shows by pioneering artists Chris Marker and JR, Discovery Awards picked out by a new generation of curators and editors, and a manifesto on photography in the age of the internet. But according to festival director Francois Hebel, that's..."

This sounds like it would be great!
Now, if I can only find a part-time job to save up for a trip to Arles (assuming my wife is in good enough health by then), well, who knows, just might try to meet all the RFF'ers at Arles in 2012. God willing, of course.
