My grandmother and her best friend decided to take the journey of a lifetime when I was 1 year old. Why they didn't ask me to go with them, I don't know. Bummer. Before she died a few years ago, she gave me her suitcases of prints, negatives and slides for safekeeping.

Since then, scanning them all has been an unstarted project. Since I am debating getting rid of my Leica m9p and just shooting film, I am wanting to see if the whole scanning thing is for me in the long run. I figured I might as well tackle her pictures so my children (and others) can see what she saw.

Here are the first three. I converted them to black and white because some of the slides come out very red no matter what treatment I do to them. I hope to continue this thread an a regular basis.

Alright, I'll just have an orange juice for this hot humid day and follow you on your journey. 🙂
Keep posting please.

Yes, please keep them coming!
Sydney is my favorite city!
Of course, I am eager to see other part of the world from 1969.
In those days, there were so many places Americans could not go easily (or at all) - the USSR, China, SE Asia, eastern Europe, etc. But there was still a lot worth seeing.

Very cool photos.

I see these were taken in 1969. Maybe Yashica or Contax but not a Yashica Contax as that relationship didn't start until 1976.

I have a nice auto-tone function on my image editor. I'd be willing to take a crack at one of the "red" photos, if you want to send me one of the scans (mike@elekm.net).

Is that the reddish colour you mentioned in the silk weaver shot ?

Yes, here is the original without me trying to fix anything. I tried to get it as good as I could in Vuescan prior to scanning it as a tiff, but I still had to do a lot in post process. By getting rid of the overall red, I lose some of the red that should actually be there.

It looks like the problem you're having is more magenta than red. If you're using photoshop, bring up the color balance and adjust the magenta towards green for the mid tones. I think that will make a big difference.
